"Tom and his crew did a wonderful job removing some trees that fell on my house. The work involved a challenging location on a steep hillside and in a deep creek bed, and they were able to safely cut up and remove everything without causing further damage to my house. They also got on the roof to check for damage and remove all the debris up there. I was impressed by how efficiently they worked and how clean they left the job site. They responded quickly, did an awesome job, and charged a reasonable fee. I highly recommend them and will definitely use them on my next house project!"

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

The best size river rock for your landscaping project depends on how you plan to use the stones. Generally, most river rocks used in landscaping are between 1/2 and 8 inches in diameter. For walkways and pathways, smaller rocks between 1 and 3 inches are suitable. For water features, medium-sized stones from 2 to 5 inches often work best. Garden beds can benefit from a mix of medium and large stones, ranging from 3 to 8 inches. These sizes can cover applications like decorative flower beds and drainage areas around foundations or retaining walls. For added visual interest, landscapers sometimes intersperse smaller river rocks with large boulders.

Stump grindings are usually safe to use in soil, but in some cases, it’s not recommended. Wood chips in particular can bind nitrogen in the soil, which will make it difficult for grass to grow. That’s why it’s important to remove most wood chips and use healthy garden soil if you want to cover the stump spot with grass. Large wood chips may attract beetles and could encourage the growth of fungi when they decay, so you may want to remove them when using the grindings.

Rubber mulch costs an average of $90 per yard to replace, or $4 per foot. Costs vary based on the quality of the rubber mulch, manufacturer prices, and the cost of delivery and installation labor to lay it down. Consult a local mulch professional for a price quote on your specific installation project.

Most experts recommend a quarter-inch layer of compost for best results, and you will need about .77 cubic yards of material per 1,000 square feet. To measure how much compost to use, take the square footage of your yard and multiply it by .77, then divide that number by 1,000.

The average cost of a gravel driveway is about $1.25 to $2.00 per square foot, including materials, equipment, and professional installation. For example, a 1-car, 20-foot-long driveway (240 sq ft) might cost $300–$432, while a 2-car, 50-foot-long driveway (1,200 sq ft) could cost $1,500–$2,160. Key cost factors include the type and thickness of the gravel, the amount of site preparation required, the condition of the landscape, local labor costs, and job site accessibility.
