Some trees will bounce back just fine, and others will struggle and possibly die. Palm tree roots grow as deep as three feet into the ground, although soil and growing conditions could mean they go as far as 50 inches into the earth. 

If you want to be able to repurpose the grass in the area where you removed a stump later, you’ll have to dig quite deep—and perhaps wide—to trim away all the roots.

Palm trees aren’t much different than your typical tree removal. Removing a palm tree is a standard procedure as long as pros have the proper tools and supplies. For DIYers, however, there are some risks associated with palm tree removal. Palm trees have spiky fronds, bark, and patches of hefty wood. So, it’s best to let an experienced tree service pro remove a palm tree.

We don’t recommend DIY tree trimming for a few different reasons. First, the tools required to trim a tree can be costly, up to $1,100 or more, for the ladders and specialized saws needed. 

Safety is another concern, especially when working with more mature trees. As a guideline, you should only DIY tree trimming when branches are less than two inches in diameter. It can be bad to leave a dead stump in the ground. A stump becomes a hefty piece of dead wood in time and eventually (especially with the help of rain) starts to rot.
