If you have pets or a bustling household, you might want to consider having your furniture professionally cleaned every six to 12 months. Conversely, if your furniture only gets a little use, a more extended time, like every 24 months, might make more sense.

It might be possible to use a carpet cleaner on your couch, but it’s not recommended. Some carpet cleaners contain chemicals that are too harsh or abrasive for the soft fabric on your couch. Plus, couches have upholstery codes that dictate what you can and can’t use safely for cleaning purposes, and carpet cleaner generally isn’t included in those codes. If you do decide to use a carpet cleaner, test it on a section of fabric that isn’t visible in case you damage it.

If there is only a small amount of gum, it’s entirely possible to remove it on your own. What you’re unable to pick or scrape off, try to scrub out with warm soapy water. You can try freezing the garment and removing the hardened gum. Some swear by rubbing peanut butter on the gum before washing.
