"Dustin with Rat A Tat Renovations was incredible start to finish. I initially met with him to quote the interior walls and trim being painted, however after talking to him about my vision for the property, I hired him to complete a few other projects; 2 bathroom remodels, painting the kitchen cabinets and replacing the existing tile floors with something more durable. He gave me different options and walked me through the entire process. I appreciated him fitting me since it was a tight timeframe with only a few days notice for him to start the project. I look forward to having him work on ALL future projects!!"

"The floor was changed from wooden slats to a ceramic tile that the contractor recommended.  The screen windows were changed out to full view custom casement windows and two new full-view doors.  A room-specific heating and air conditioning unit was also added.  The whole room was painted inside and out.
The people working on this job were fantastic--friendly, conscientious, and truly professional at their craft.  We do not hesitate to recommend this company for any remodel job.  In fact they are just starting work on the basement."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Tile installation can be expensive because it requires more time and labor to install than many other materials. For example, laminate flooring can click and lock into place, and carpet comes in large rolls that you can secure to the floor. On the other hand, tiles need to be cut, laid individually, grouted, and left to cure.

There are several tools that you will use together to install tiles. Four of the most basic tools needed in tile installation include a notched trowel for applying tile adhesive, a tile cutter or saw for cutting tiles to size, tile spacers for creating the appropriate amount of space between tiles, and a grout float for applying grout.

Tile costs vary by material; for example, ceramic tends to be more affordable than stone. These influence installation timelines and skill requirements.

If the hearth ends against a wall, you can use a tile cutter as you normally would. However, if the edge of your hearth ends with no surface pressing against it,you may want to look into rounded tiles. These give a smooth edge to your hearth and make sure cut edges aren’t visible. You can also see if the tile you have has pieces that have been glazed or rounded on one edge. You’d then cut the tile and place it normally, with the cut edge facing inward.

If you hire a professional to lay tile, you can expect to pay $3 to $15 per square foot for labor. For a 100-square-foot tiling project, that would equal $30 to $150 in labor. These costs may increase if you need extra services (such as tile removal, wall repair, or waterproofing). For example, tile removal costs an additional $2 to $7 per square foot.
