There are a few different types of finishes to choose from for the final step of the project. 

Water-based polyurethane sealants emit fewer odors and fumes but dry quickly, which can pose a challenge when trying to get a smooth coat. Other inexpensive and durable choices include standard vinyl plank ($2 to $7 per square foot), which mimics wood or stone and is great for high-traffic areas. Laminate flooring ($1 to $6 per square foot), linoleum, carpeting, and concrete can also be cost-effective options, with prices starting around $2 per square foot.

In order to avoid long-lasting waves, indents, or sticking, it’s a good idea to wait at least 24 hours after fresh carpet is laid to put weighty furniture on top of it. However, you can begin walking on your new carpet right after it’s installed, and doing so can actually help it adhere to the floor better.
