"We hired Andy to perform a complete kitchen gut and remodel, including removing a wall to get our open concept dream space. We have all new cabinets, complete with soft close drawers, granite counter tops , lighting (new pendants and cans as well as beautiful under cabinet LED), farmhouse sink, refinished hardwoods. Andy and his team also completely transformed our living/dining great room by installing beautiful car siding wood ship lap style ceiling with gorgeous beams and trusses in a contrasting color. They also removed the old stone floor tile in the living/dining area, installed solid hardwoods to make them tie in to the main floor flooring. They also installed beautiful custom bookcases and a feature stone wall fireplace in the great room, as well as a granite top huge buffet feature on the dining room side of our great room, complete with lots of new cabinets and storage. They also completely gutted and renovated our out-dated master bathroom. They added a huge shower, free standing tub, new toilet, new vanities with new fixtures and gorgeous granite tops. They installed new floor tile and heated floors (my personal favorite and a godsend for Indiana winters). They renovated the master bedroom ceiling by changing the pitch of the ceiling and installing beautiful shiplap style wood to match the great room ceiling. Finally, they gave our basement fireplace a beautiful stone facelift to match the main floor fireplace. In addition, they replaced the backspace tile of our basement bar area. The work is impeccable. We only had a few minor items come up during the three month project, but Andy addressed everything quickly. This was a very large renovation but Andy and his team did an amazing job. It even came in on time and at budget. Andy is salt of the earth and is very trustworthy. Andy kept communications very open and he kept us apprised of the project status frequently. He and his crew treated us and our home very respectfully. He and his crew were so pleasant, safe and very cautious with maintaining appropriate social distancing and other Covid-19 safety practices during the project. We will absolutely use his services again. This was the best contractor experience we have ever had. Thanks Andy! We LOVE our home and have you to thank for that."

"The work Hill Construction did for me was actually a garage roof and a repair on my house roof but this form did not have roofs as a selection. The work was excellent my roof looks great. Customer service was great also. I was kept informed throughout the job of how it was coming along. I recommend this company and would hire them again."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Rebar is an essential part of reinforcing a basement floor, as not having it can impact its structural integrity. It helps absorb the tension factors that contribute to cracks in your floor and strengthens its load-bearing capabilities by evenly distributing the weight. Not including rebar could lead to an unstable floor, so don’t skip it!

Adding an extension or addition to your home costs more than a loft conversion in all but the rarest cases where the home's structural integrity is lacking. Because a home addition requires a new foundation section or significant structural upgrades to handle a cantilevered portion, the cost compared to almost any loft conversion is significantly greater for the same square footage.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

Unless you have extensive experience in construction work, remodeling a basement is best left to a professional. There are several tasks associated with this project that require exact precision, including:

  • Replacing insulation

  • Replacing carpet or other flooring

  • Adding heating and cooling

  • Adjusting or adding walls and doors

  • Altering or adding plumbing elements

If any of these elements is done incorrectly, it could severely impact the quality of your basement remodel and be dangerous. Changing a basement often comes with code safety requirements, like egress windows and proper ventilation. Therefore, leaving it up to a professional is often the best decision.

Yes, you can add a kitchenette to a basement. However, you’ll have to consider the costs associated with basement kitchenettes. If you’re starting from scratch in an unfinished basement, you’ll need to account for brand-new plumbing, electrical, flooring, and more in addition to the cost of the kitchenette. If you’re putting a kitchenette in an already finished basement equipped with plumbing and electrical, you’ll save considerable money.
