"Austin and Kyler are knowledgeable, hardworking and professional. They met wth me, came up with a design plan, and a cost breakdown. The plan included trimming, mulching, tree removal and planting. Following up work for fall is also planned. Their commitment to the client is top notch. Communication during all phases of project has been great. I highly recommend AK Solutions for your landscaping needs."

"Shane is very reliable, fair, and communicative. He quoted my job in the Fall, promised to follow up in the Spring due to temperature conditions at that time, and was true to his word. Good quality work, too."

"A+ promptly kept the estimating appointment. I was impressed with the way Mr. Eicher described how they would prep the surfaces for the best long term job. He was honest about wood that needed to be replaced. Their estimate was not the cheapest but, as I said, I was impressed with the good job that was described to me. It was not a good job, but a most excellent job. I could not imagine a better outcome. The crew was very thorough and meticulous with their work as well as courteous. They went above and beyond to give me a perfect outcome. They also completed the project in what I consider ahead of schedule. The work area was cleaned up daily and in the end you could barely tell they had to do extensive scraping of the wood areas. They worked very hard to clean up all the chips that fell from the paint they scrapped off. I would give them the highest rating in all areas of the job. I wish all my repair and updating jobs were done as expertly as this one.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Composite decking is the best material for individuals living with disabilities who want to age in place. The material is anti-slip, which increases safety throughout the year. It’s also highly durable and requires minimal maintenance, so it doesn’t add another item to the individual’s to-do list. It’s also a good option for improving wheelchair accessibility at home, as it can easily manage a wheelchair ramp.

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.

Yes, you can build a deck over your outdoor HVAC unit, but you need to leave at least 5 feet of vertical clearance above the unit. If you don’t want your deck to be that high off the ground, you could build a floating deck in another part of your yard—again, as long as you leave at least 4 feet of horizontal space between the deck and your AC unit.

Yes, using sustainable materials and recycled composites offer green solutions.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.
