At this point, we?d been in the house about three months and had no local Yellow Pages, so we went online and Googled ?emergency plumbing service? and found Korte. We called and Josh said it was likely our well pump, but that there was a chance it was the pressure switch. He said it would cost $290 for him to come out and replace the switch and warned us that might not work. Facing an entire weekend with no running water, no flushing toilets, no showers, we told him we wanted to give it a try. He came out and replaced the pressure switch. As he feared, it didn?t fix the problem. He recommended replacing the submersible well pump and said Korte could schedule us for first-thing Monday morning. (He explained that it would cost thousands to do that kind of work on a weekend.) Monday, October 8, 2012 Korte?s ?well experts,? Mike and Neal, come out to replace the submersible pump. They have no idea what kind of well head we have, nor do they have any idea how to get it open. But they assure us all the while that they are experts. They tell us, ?We have 75 years of well experience between us. This is all we do.? They spend hours on the phone, consulting with their fellow ?experts? and supervisors, even going so far as to text a photo of our well head to their most expert guy, but no one has a clue. It?s all so very unusual, like nothing they?ve ever seen before. They decide that we have some sort of special, customized well head. They tell us that it will need to be cut out and replaced with a standardized well head. They bring in a backhoe, dig up half the front yard, cut out the existing iron well head and replace it with a PVC well cap. The cost is $3250. Noted on the invoice is the fact that our water table was at 4 feet. It?s important that Korte made this notation after the worst drought in Indiana in 50 years. At this point the well is working, so we hired a landscaper to come in to re-landscape the front yard to cover up the giant mud pit left by Korte. This cost several thousand dollars. Sunday, April 14, 2013 The well head starts spewing water. (Why do these things always happen on a weekend?) We turn off the pump at the breaker and call Korte. The tech we spoke with, John, insisted that if we had turned off the pump, there was no way that water could be coming up out of the well head. On that and two subsequent phone calls, he was condescending and rude, refusing to believe that we had turned off the pump. He kept insisting that what we were describing was ?impossible.? He said the best he could do would be to come out and verify that the pump was off, but that it would cost $111. We declined his offer of ?help? and spent a sleepless night worrying that the house was going to flood with all that water gushing out front. We also spent another day without any running water or flushing toilets or showers. Monday, April 15, 2013 Neal from Korte shows up and verifies that the ?impossible? is happening and that everything we had been telling John was correct. He replaced the wire-nut electrical connectors inside the well head with waterproof crimp-and-heat-shrink connectors. He said that nothing could be done to stop the water from gushing. He said that once the water table went down, the well head would stop gushing. When we noted that no one else in the neighborhood had a well head that was gushing water, he said that we should be proud of our well head. He actually said, ?Enjoy your water feature.? He suggested that if the gushing water, which was continuing to flood the front yard, started to get to us, we should ?stuff a towel down in the well head.? He said the charge for waterproofing the electrical lines was $180. When we protested, asking why they hadn?t installed waterproofed electrical lines back in October, he said he ?didn?t anticipate? at the time that waterproofing would be needed, and he insisted he should be paid for this call because ?the situation has changed.? Saturday, April 20, 2013 We notice that water is coming into the garage through the electrical conduit coming from the well head. The water is traveling up through the conduit, down the electrical wires and into the 220-volt junction box for the pressure switch, exposing us to possible electrocution. The breaker for the pump is clicking and humming as though it were about to short out. We try to relieve the water pressure ourselves by turning on a hose in the already-flooded back yard and running the faucets indoors. We let the hose run outside for four days straight. Doing so does keep water from coming into the garage. The well head continues to gush. It?s been seven awful, extremely stressful days of water gushing from the well head into the front yard, with no end in sight. Saturday, April 27, 2013 It?s now been two weeks and the water continues to flow from the wellhead. It shows no signs of slacking, much less stopping. The front yard has several very large, puddles of water that look to be going stagnant. It is starting to smell, and we feel it must be a health hazard. We decide to do our own research on Google. After doing very little reading, we discover that our original well head WAS distinctive precisely because it is designed to alert well specialists that they are dealing with is a naturally pressurized well: 1. Ours is a flowing artesian well, one in which pressure from within the aquifer will, left alone, actually push water right up the well casing and out its top. 2. Our old well head was a spool, a very distinctive, easily recognizable well cap designed expressly for flowing artesian wells. In addition to keeping naturally pressurized water from coming out of the well head, the spool prevents the well casing from cracking in the winter. 3. The water coming out of our well head is not unusual, nor is it something that cannot be fixed. In fact, it MUST be fixed before more serious, permanent damage is done (including well and/or aquifer damage and contamination, biohazard conditions, flooding, property damage and even sinkholes). We discovered these facts in about 10 minutes with Google. Sunday, April 28, 2013 After doing more research we call Korte. Like the previous Korte ?experts? we?ve dealt with, Brad has no idea what we?re talking about. He does not know what a well spool is, what a naturally pressurized well is, that water flowing out of a well head can be stopped. He asks us where we got our information. We tell him Google. Brad says that he will have to get with the people involved and they will call us back on Monday. When I ask when we should expect his call, he replies late afternoon. With our confidence in Korte at zero, we decide that it?s best to try to find an actual well expert, someone who knows what we are dealing with. Monday, April 29, 2013 On Monday morning, we start calling well specialists from the Yellow Pages. (We have a phone book at this point.) We got through to someone who was familiar with flowing wells and explained our situation. He calls right back and says the part he needs is in stock and he can come out and fix the problem right away for $450. Less than a half hour after an actual well expert arrives, the water that has been flowing out of the well head for fourteen excruciating days is stopped, completely and permanently. He estimates that had we called him to swap out the pump, the job would have been $1500-$1600 total. There would have been no need to dig up the yard, no need to re-landscape, no need to replace our solid iron well cap with a plastic PCV model. And most importantly, there would have been no two weeks of water gushing out of the well head, no two weeks of stress and worry and sleepless nights, no spending our nights and weekends trying to figure out what was going on. We cannot speak about the quality of any other Korte work, but it is ou"},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/in/new-haven/korte-does-it-all%2C-inc-reviews-6194054.htm"},"position":6},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"Courtney Construction Service","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"IN","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Patricia A."},"reviewBody":"
Courtney Construction has certainly done lots of work on my house (10 contracted jobs). As general contractors, they can do it all. As indicated in the previous question, I have engaged them to handle all types of jobs. They are trustworthy, thorough, and skilled in what they do. John Hanger (foreman) takes great pride in the quality of work they perform and does not cut corners. When they discover problems, they solve them rather than cover them up. In my 62 year old house, there have been lots of problems covered up by past owners/contractors. I do believe we have discovered most and corrected all that have been discovered. Overview of Jobs:Master Bathroom Remodel: Demo down to the studs and subfloor, replaced everything with high-end fixtures(cabinets, lighting and air tub), installed porcelain tile in decorative pattern, installed heated flooring, and replaced all plumbing, venting and electrical.Whole House Generator: Poured concrete pad for generator, did all electrical work, ran natural gas line to the generatorHallway Bathroom Remodel: Demo shower, expanded shower by bumping into the hallway closet, replaced all fixtures with high-end fixtures, replaced all lighting and venting, and installed marble to countertops and shower door frame and shower seat.Front Entry: Demo existing steps that had been updated in the past by previous owner (did not match the period of the house) and were crumbling. I logged onto Angie's List and found what I considered an excellent local plumbing company indicated by their ratings. Knowing that everything is more expensive on a holiday, I called at 7:30 am anyway . I was told they could have someone out between 10am and noon. I was also told if I could wait until the next day it would cost less. I appreciated the information, but I needed the drain unclogged. I was surprised when I got a call at 8:15 am by the plumber who would be coming out. He said he could be here in about 45 minutes. Overpriced, over 250 dollars an hour? For a non emergency plumbing repair? Ridiculous. Job was fine… wasn’t a hard one so not surprised.

The sorriest excuse for a 'professional' I've ever known. We've had to deal with Brennan for a few different situations in the past and ALWAYS regretted it. He has NO CLUE what he is doing, either with electronics or Heating/Plumbing. And the plumbing "repair" that he did was so bad we had to...

"Chance was great. He installed our 3-stage water filtration system (US Water sediment, carbon, and Pulsar UV) with an existing softener, a new water heater, and fixed two shower leaks (one drain, one valve). In all of these, he efficiently evaluated each system and made the necessary updates. This was working with a plumbing system originally installed in the 1980s. Fair pricing, and very professional. We highly recommend him."

"I bought a water heater. They first connected me with a plumbing company that tried to add on $270 for additional materials and labor costs that they could not justify. I returned the water heater, and they again connected me to Holthaus. Holthaus called later that same afternoon and scheduled for the next morning. Dan came out and installed the water heater and new stand in just an hour. He only charged $30 for additional materials related to new gas fittings. He was very polite, transparent, and thorough. FAQs for plumbing handyman service projects in Huntington, IN
The average cost to hire a handyman ranges from about $40 to $140 per hour. Average project cost ranges between $180 and $700, but the cost per hour and per project depends heavily on the type, size, and complexity of the project. The pro’s experience level and your location also factor into how much a handyman charges per hour or per project. You can also expect to pay higher rates or additional fees for emergency services, or around periods of high customer demand, like holidays.
Yes, most states require plumbers to be licensed, and for good reason. Hiring an unlicensed plumber could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations.
As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:
The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check
Required to have applicable state and local licenses
Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review
Paying to advertise their services
Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi
Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
Do you have any before and after photos of your work?
How long have you been doing this kind of work?
Do you clean up and dispose of waste when the job is finished?
Yes, you should hire a handyman who’s licensed, certified, and insured, if possible. States have different requirements for handyman licensing, registration, and certifications. If licensing is required in your area, you may pay more for a licensed handyman with experience than one who is not licensed or certified, but you’re likely to get a better end result for your project. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local handymen guidelines.
The average cost to hire a plumber is around $100 an hour but can vary between $45 and $200 an hour depending on the plumber’s experience and the repair that you need.
