"The workers and office staff were easy to talk to, well informed, courteous , and efficient. They performed a thorough inspection. "Extremely well. Sergio was early when coming to inspect for an estimate. He was very responsive to email and text (within 24 hours). He and an assistant showed up promptly at the arranged time. They were efficient and cleaned up after they were done. They fixed the hole in the chimney stucco and matched the color of the original stucco so that one cannot tell the repairs from the rest of the house."

Backdraft is usually caused by a ventilation or pressure problem. To stop it, you need to replace the air your fireplace draws out through the chimney, so open a window to try and increase the airflow. Sometimes turning on a kitchen or bathroom exhaust fan can help, but they could also be the cause of the backdraft depending on the air pressure inside your home. You may need to install a makeup air system (MUAS) or chimney fan.

If you have a gas fireplace with an electric ignition and you’re experiencing a power outage, you will need to light your fireplace’s pilot manually before you can start a fire. The instructions should be in the manufacturer’s manual.

Sap, despite its stickiness, is primarily made of water and is responsible for wood being “green” when it’s first cut. Green wood doesn’t burn very easily and will snap and crackle a lot, not ideal for a fire pit or fireplace. That’s why it’s best to let fresh, sap-filled wood season or dry out for at least a season before you start burning.

When your fireplace is not in use for longer periods of time, such as over the summer, you can keep smells at bay by spraying either a commercial fireplace deodorizing product or a blend of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water around the walls of the fireplace.

  • Cracks, stains, or scorch marks in the firebox

  • A broken or stuck damper
