"Both teams were good and professional.  Anytime I called they were pretty responsive.  The first batch was defective as the tabs would not seal. Fiber cement siding is the best siding to install over stucco because it offers many of the same benefits for homes where stucco is common, including fire resistance, insect resistance, and good insulation. Fiber cement siding is also rigid, so it won’t warp over time like vinyl siding might if installed over furring strips.

If you’re wondering how to clean clapboard siding, the approach depends on its material and condition. Siding in good shape may need only light soap and spray from the hose, while older siding often requires more thorough treatment. For serious cleaning, power washing can remove caked-on dirt, but you should consider hiring a professional to avoid causing damage in the process.

You can put new siding over clapboards, but it’s not recommended. Some sidings, like vinyl siding, can go over clapboards with sheathing like a foam layer in between. However, it’s best to remove clapboard siding if you plan on replacing it with new siding. Burying wood clapboards underneath new siding can create risks of rot and mold, or hidden insect damage. It can also create warping issues over time. Removing clapboards allows you to properly install a new sheathing, as well as clean up the exterior wall and look for any signs of damage.

You should use a siding nail gun for siding installation, but if you don’t have one you can use a framing nailer instead, if the nails are long enough to firmly attach to the clapboard siding. However, framing requires longer nails that join lumber together. In that instance, siding nails will not be enough.

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.
