"I was not familiar with JL Anderson until reading all the positive reviews on Angie's List, so we decided to give them a try.  Joe Kollman arrived right on time for our appointment and was very knowledgeable and patient answering my multitude of questions and subsequent e-mails before we finally made a decision.  We were originally going to replace just our 20 year-old air conditioner but decided to have them replace the furnace as well so we could have two stage heat and a variable speed blower.  Our furnace was also 9 years old and noisy.  We have a zoned system with two thermostats, and Joe completely understood what was needed to recommend the best option.  The installers, Kirt and Cody, were extremely courteous and showed up on time.  The HVAC installation took the better part of two days as expected, and they got enough done the first day such that the house was warm when we got home from work and through the night.  They were very respectful of our house and left our basement cleaner than when they arrived!  Their installation was the very best I've seen.  Ironically, the night we were to review work with Joe, we discovered that our water heater had started to leak.  Joe was able to rearrange appointments the next day to have Kirt and Cody back out to do the water heater replacement.  Joe checked available options and reviewed those with me starting early the following morning.  He made a special trip to our house to make sure the new water heater would fit and and was back out with the new unit in his truck staying to help his guys carry it to the basement (since we upgraded to a 75 gallon model due to teenagers in the house).  In less than 24 hours, we had a new water heater and hot water.  The entire system is amazingly quiet compared to our old equipment.  I can't say enough about Joe, Kirt, and Cody and would highly recommend JL Anderson."

"I call Hater Heater Express based on previous reviews. Jeremy Williams took my call and after I explained that I needed to replace my 18 year old water heater, he asked what time of the day would be best to come out and take care of my replacement. He explained that he liked to provide same day service and any hours I would be available would work for him. We agreed to meet at my house at 3:30pm and he estimated that the time to replace my water heater with a new one would take about an hour. He also provided an all-inclusive price to remove and haul away the old water heater, install a new unit. In short, Jeremy arrived on time, completed the install in under an hour and charged my as per his original quote. I highly recommend Water Heater Express of Lafayette."

"We pay yearly but we have this is included with our rental property. They are pretty good on most things. We had a hot water heater replaced and they did an excellent job on that. They are very quick on their response. They dont come out here. It is all done on the internet.  I just like the idea that one time service charge is so much better than trying to hiring someone to come in. It is more about convenience. It pays for itself."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Yes, most municipalities have codes that require water heaters to have pans. A pan is necessary when a water heater or hot water storage tank is installed in an area where water leakage could cause damage, such as an attic, second floor, or finished basement. Tankless water heaters are not required to have a pan since there is no storage tank.

We recommend you turn off the unit, the power, and the water supply as soon as you notice a leak. Your water heater tank should have a dedicated shut-off valve located on the cold inlet pipes. If the valve is broken or inoperable, use the shut-off valve to your home's main water supply to stop the flow to the entire house.

Avoid touching valves or pipes directly without confirming if they are hot. Wear gloves and other safety gear to keep from coming into contact with hot levers or components when turning off your leaking water heater.

You don’t have to replace expansion tanks at the same time as your hot water heater. You may be able to go six to 12 years or more before needing to replace your expansion tank. At $150 to $450, hot water heater expansion tanks are usually much more affordable than the cost of hot water tanks themselves, which average about $1,190.

If your water heater continues to have issues, you may wonder how long an electric water heat lasts. On average, these units last between 10 to 15 years. Following a proper maintenance schedule can help the water heater live to the end of its average lifespan or longer.

The average cost to replace a water heater is around $1,325, with a typical range of $900 to $1,800 for a standard replacement. The final price depends on the type of heater (tank vs. tankless), its size, fuel source (gas or electric), and the complexity of the installation. A simple one-to-one replacement will be on the lower end of the cost spectrum. However, if you are switching from one type of heater or energy source to another, you can expect labor costs to be significantly higher due to the extra work involved. It's also worth considering that while gas and electric heaters may have similar upfront costs, their long-term operating costs can differ based on local utility prices.
