"RS Surface Coatings was the best experience I have had with remodeling! They remodeled 2 bathrooms and other projects! Rene managed the entire project from the planning, management and delivery of the service with perfection! He was very easy to reach and kept everything on schedule! The quality of work from Feli on the tile work for the master and 2nd bathroom was perfectly done! The attention to detail was amazing by all! Luis was amazing fixing everything from our plumbing to electrical and any handyman work you need!!! Also, the team worked long hours and kept to the planned completion date and even finished ahead of schedule!! The entire team cares and worked so hard to deliver a beautiful remodeling of our house! Thank you Rene and team for a great experience with our remodeling!!!"

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Tile costs vary by material; for example, ceramic tends to be more affordable than stone. These influence installation timelines and skill requirements.

Silicone caulk shouldn’t be used in place of grout because each material serves its own purpose. Thanks to its flexibility, silicone caulk is good for sealing around the perimeter of tiled floors, where movement and expansion might occur. However, grout is more durable, making it a better option for the joints in between tiles, which need to withstand constant weight and foot traffic.

Like glass tiles, you will not need to seal most porcelain tiles, particularly if the porcelain is already glazed. It depends on quality. Porcelain is very water resistant, but it is not 100% waterproof. To avoid staining, some homeowners use a penetrating sealer. It is also a good idea to seal your grout. Unless you use epoxy grout, grout is very porous and can harbor bacteria, mold, and mildew.

Yes, you can tile over existing tiles in a bathroom, but it is not always recommended. For this method to be successful, the original tile surface must be clean, flat, and free of damage such as cracks, unevenness, mold, or mildew. While tiling over existing tiles can save time and money, there are potential drawbacks. The new adhesive may not bond properly, and the process adds extra weight to the wall or floor. Additionally, the increased height of the surface could interfere with door clearances. For the best and most durable results, removing the old tiles before installing new ones is generally the better option.

No, tiling over painted walls or wallpapered surfaces is generally not recommended. Textured surfaces and paints will affect the adhesive, possibly causing tiles to lift or fall off. Painted walls with a semi-gloss or high-gloss finish are particularly difficult for adding tiles. It’s wise to strip the paint first if you install the tiles to drywall, although it’s still best to opt for a cement backer board.
