"BEST. Over a dozen years we have hired 5 different tree services to take out dead trees on our large lot, remove branches, etc.. Jerry Powers of Performance Tree Service, Centerville, IN., is by far the very best we have had work with us. Excellent service, did exactly what we requested, cleaned up perfectly, good job grinding stumps, very reasonable charge for services. Recommend very highly!"

"Tyler, from Trees and Mostly Stumps, replied immediately to my request for stump removal. He was very professional and most importantly to me, he was prompt! He was able to come within the next day to remove 2 stumps. Much to my surprise, the price I paid was lower than what I had already agreed to over the phone. Once he got to the location of the stumps and saw that the stumps were smaller than what I had described, he then lowered the price from the quote we agreed to over the phone. He is honest and trust worthy! The stumps are gone and he did not leave any debris! I would highly recommend Trees and Mostly Stumps for all of your stump removal!"

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

A chainsaw is the best tool to cut down a tree, but you may also use a handsaw or ax. You may also want to use a lopper or pole saw to remove limbs before cutting down the tree. Wear chainsaw chaps and protective gear, including eyewear and earplugs if you use a chainsaw. Again, if you’re unsure about how to use this tool, this project may be one to skip.

When a palm tree no longer produces new fronds and old fronds start turning yellow-brown, that’s a sign the tree is dying. However, transplanted palm trees can show these signs for the first several months as they re-establish themselves. It’s best to keep watering and not give up on the palm tree until a couple of seasons have passed and you’re sure it’s not coming back to life.

We recommend removing the stump, and grinding is a popular way to do it. You can also dig out small stumps or stumps that have fully decayed instead of grinding them. However, don’t try using acids or fire for killing a tree stump, which is a fire hazard and illegal in many areas.

Leaving the stump alone invites eventual problems, including attracting termites, mold, and fungi.

It is possible to cut down a tree on your property yourself, but it is generally not recommended unless specific conditions are met. You should only consider this project if the tree is small (e.g., under 4-5 inches in diameter and short enough that you don't need a ladder to reach the branches), and you are experienced in handling a chainsaw. The tree must also be located far from any power lines, fences, homes, or other structures. Even for small trees, the work can be dangerous, and it's always advisable to have a spotter to ensure the tree falls correctly and no branches fall on you.

For any tree that is large, requires a ladder to access, or is near electrical lines or structures, you should always hire a professional. Attempting to remove a large tree yourself is extremely dangerous, poses a risk of serious injury, and could result in significant damage to your property.

Before any tree removal, it's also important to check your local and state regulations to ensure the tree is not historic or otherwise protected by your city.

The ideal depth of a tree notch depends on the tree, but it should usually be between 20% and 25% of the tree’s depth. However, if the tree is leaning towards the direction of the notch, it can be cut more shallowly—at as little as 10% of the depth. When the tree is leaning away from the direction it needs to be felled, you can cut deeper, closer to 30%.
