"Anthony 's has taken care of my lawn for years and recently removed a very large tree from my front yard. His crew is always so professional, friendly and courteous. The tree was taken care of in a timely manner and the clean up afterwards was equally well done. I would recommend Anthony's Lawncare to anyone who needs yardwork. They provide a trustworthy stellar service!"

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Yes, rubber mulch allows water to seep through and reach the soil underneath. Rubber mulch is not as absorbent as organic mulch, which allows the soil underneath to stay moist and hydrated. Keep in mind that the permeability of rubber mulch can get clogged by landscape fabric and other additional materials.

The number of bags of topsoil you need depends on the depth you’re filling. The average topsoil is sold in a roughly forty-pound bag, covering 12 square feet at a one-inch depth. Since topsoil is by nature the uppermost layer of soil, you can bet on only needing to fill about 4 to 8 inches of soil depth with it.

The ideal amount of mulch is the square footage of your desired depth in inches divided by 324. Aim to keep your old and/or new mulch at a depth of no more than three or four inches.

Among the most common types of gravel are pea gravel, crushed stone, marble chips, jersey shore gravel, and base gravel. Gravel has different densities depending on whether it’s wet or dry or mixed with sand.

A good driveway should have a solid base layer and a smooth surface layer of gravel. A base layer of larger gravel, around 1 to 2 inches, keeps the foundation stable and helps with drainage. For the top layer, smaller gravel, about 1/4 to 1/2 inches, compacts well and creates an even surface that’s easier to drive on. Using both ensures the driveway stays durable, drains properly, and doesn’t shift over time.
