"Mindia and Nick did a beautiful job on our slate kitchen countertop, leveling and repairing a cracked seam and also rehoning stone surfaces in two bathrooms. They were easy to work with, super responsive by text, and finished the job within the time frame we had established. I would definitely hire them again and highly recommend them."

"We needed to have the cutout depth in our quartz countertop increased when we replaced a 2008 has stove with a new induction stove. Maurizio and Juan of Avanti Stone made precise cuts while keeping stone dust complete contained. At the beginning of the work, they explained their process thoroughly. We thought it would be impossible find anyone to come out and do the work and to do it well. We couldn't be happier!"

"We were 100% satisfied with ZK Stone Restoration. Very professional. Explained what needed to be done and the time needed to do the work. He restored our honed stone in a shower and floor in a bathroom and it looks like new again. Also did a great job cleaning and sealing our kitchen and laundry room granite after doing repairs to seams and rough spots. Would definitely recommend them."

Stone Countertops questions, answered by experts

Both marble and quartz are decent kitchen countertop choices for different reasons. Marble provides an elegant look that’s sure to attract eyeballs, which can add value to a home. However, this isn’t the most durable material around and is easily scratched and stained. Quartz may not offer a classic look like marble, but it is available in a wide range of colors and patterns. It’s also durable, with the ability to resist scratches and stains.

If you have light renovation experience, you should be able to build your own countertop made from wood or laminate. These tend to be the most DIY-friendly materials, but you’ll need to be comfortable using a circular saw and taking precise measurements. When it comes to installation, leave anything that involves plumbing, electricity, or gas lines to the pros.

Engineered stone countertops range in price between $60 and $200 per square foot. The three main types are quartz, recycled glass, and sintered stone. The most affordable is sintered stone, which is ideal for outdoor kitchens and costs $60 to $100 per square foot.

Recycled glass countertops fall in the middle at $65 to $140 per square foot and offer a very distinct look. Meanwhile, quartz counters are on the higher end of the price range at $50 to $200 per square foot. Popular quartz options mimic the look of natural stones like marble and granite.

Different types of engineered stone countertops require varying installation methods. The best option is to hire a countertop installer, especially if you are unfamiliar with the stone you plan to use. Generally speaking, quartz is the easiest for DIYers because you can cut it on site with a diamond blade and diamond hole saw. The average DIYer is unlikely to have the special tools to cut sintered stone countertops. Before diving into a project, make sure you have the experience and tools to do the job correctly.

Epoxy is typically more affordable than granite, especially if you’re choosing a high-end slab. Most granite countertops cost $75 to $145 per square foot to install, with high-end varieties topping $185 per square foot.

In contrast, epoxy countertops cost $50 to $150 per square foot to install. The material costs for epoxy are significantly lower than granite, but installation costs can be higher. Rather than simply cutting granite countertops to size before installation, your contractor will need to carefully pour the epoxy over an existing surface.
