At Cherokee Outdoors we specialize in mowing, trimming and even overgrown yard clean ups. We also can redo and or touch up mulch beds and trimming bushes in front of homes or even businesses. Other services such as clean edging of driveways and sidewalks can also be done if needed or desired. We can do one time clean ups but we usually have weekly customers that we take care of all there lawn service needs for the summer and leading into the fall. What separates us from other lawn services is that most companies only cut once over lawns which can leave large chunks of built up grass and can leave the yard looking worse than it started. But with us we always cut over the yards twice which leaves a clean cut every time.

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

If you hire a professional landscaper, you could expect to pay between $90 and $660 to install three cubic yards of river rock. (That’s based on the average river rock installation cost of $30 to $220 per cubic yard.) However, the exact price depends on the kind of river rock you choose. Crushed limestone and riprap are some of the more affordable options, while boulders and Arizona river rock are pricier.

If you are xeriscaping a lawn from scratch, your best bet for preparing the lawn is to work with a xeriscaping specialist in your area. The most common first step to making the transformation, however, will be to remove the turfgrass from your lawn. The subsequent steps will often include amending the soil to support new plants and installing low-drip or drip irrigation systems.

The best size rock for your landscaping depends on the design, as different boulders serve different purposes. If you want to group boulders to create a natural-looking cluster, you’ll need a range of sizes. Otherwise, here are some suggestions:

  • Small boulders (smaller than 12 inches across): Best for landscape edging and fire pits

  • Medium boulders (12–24 inches): Best for retaining walls and water features

  • Large boulders (more than 24 inches): Best as standalone landscaping features, steps, or walkways.

Of course, you can mix and match sizes to create a unique display.

Yes, you need to add topsoil before you hydroseed to ensure the roots can grow deep. You should cultivate and add compost or amendments to your soil before hydroseeding for optimal growth. Without topsoil, your hydroseed might not take root, leading to wasted effort and money down the drain. Soil preparation is key to the success of DIY hydroseeding.

No, gravel and crushed rock are different. Crushed rock is made in a quarry and has sharp, jagged edges. It’s most commonly used for building and construction.

Gravel naturally occurs in river beds or lakes and features smooth edges, making it a better choice for landscaping or other decorative areas. Like crushed stone, gravel can also be found in quarries, but it’s typically due to rock-on-rock erosion rather than machinery.
