You should not attempt to install your own driveway. Whether working with asphalt or pavement, this is a complicated project that requires special equipment. Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. In general, pavers should be resealed every three to five years to prevent cracking.

The best time to install permeable pavers is during mild, dry weather, usually during spring or early fall. Installing during extreme heat or heavy rain can increase the chance of problems, like poor compaction, shifting, or drainage issues. You should also avoid winter installations in areas where the ground freezes, since frozen soil can prevent proper excavation and base prep.
