"We have hired Jack Ames twice now. Two years ago he removed and then completely redid our driveway. We liked his work and great pricing so we called him again to add on. They go a step above all the time. The first time he did a last minute removal of old concete and poured a step to our patio that was not on his list. This time, he even went back and filled in dirt where the concrete would have had a huge drop off to the grass. This will save us a ton of back breaking work. The standard thickness for a concrete driveway is four inches for an area that holds cars and pickup trucks. Larger vehicles like motor homes, heavier trucks, and trailers should be thicker to accommodate the added weight without cracking. Plan to pour concrete five inches thick for driveways that need to accommodate large, heavy vehicles.

A properly installed 6-inch concrete slab, mixed and cured under the right conditions, can support about 3,000 pounds concentrated over a single square foot without buckling. Conversely, concrete pavers can handle around 8,000 pounds per square inch when laid over a solid, well-compacted base.

Thicker concrete is less likely to crack due to extreme weather changes. At a minimum, concrete slabs should be at least 4 inches, but if you’re worried about the concrete cracking under the weight of heavy machinery or from the freeze-thaw patterns of your climate, you should use even thicker concrete.
