Yes, you can clean door hinges with vinegar. The cleaner your door hinges are, the less likely they are to cause that annoying squeaking sound. Simply fill a container with equal parts water and vinegar, dip a microfiber cloth in the mixture, and use it to clean the hinges. You can do this while the hinges are connected or remove them, and wash them piece by piece.

The width of your door jamb should match your wall thickness exactly, so it depends on your wall. For standard door openings, the width is equal to the width of a 2-by-4-inch  stud, plus the width of the drywall on both sides—about 1/2 inch each—which comes out to 4 9/16 inches. Block walls and framed walls that use 2-by-6-inch framing require a door jamb that’s 6 9/16 inches. You should always measure your finished wall thickness to get an accurate width for your door jamb material.

Continuous hinges are some of the sturdiest hinges available, which makes sense, given that they provide support along the entire side of the door. These hinges are often used for heavy commercial doors, but are impractically expensive and unnecessary for residential use. Among the hinges commonly used in homes, the ball-bearing hinge is the strongest, and it reduces friction to help heavy doors open more smoothly.

You might be able to turn a normal door into a fire-rated door, but you’re better off purchasing one that meets all NFPA 80 standards. If you want to DIY a normal door into a fire door, you’ll need a self-adhesive intumescent seal, metal hinges, fire-resistant glazing, and a self-closing device, but you’re always better off buying a certified fire door.

You can convert a pre-hung door into a Dutch door, but it’s more of a pain. Pre-hung doors are already set in the frame with the hinges and everything aligned, so once you cut the slab in half, you’ll likely need to adjust the hinge placement and maybe even mess with the frame itself. It’s doable, but expect some trial and error because it’s not a straight-swap situation.
