Some homeowners, however, use wood from these trees for mulching if it is less potent due to age or concentration, or if the plants are not as sensitive to them.

In most cases, it’s better to remove rocks before adding mulch. Layering the two will restrict drainage and plant health, and can create an unpleasant texture underfoot.

Gravel is a versatile option for home projects. It is low-maintenance and cost-effective compared to other materials. In addition, gravel provides excellent drainage, reducing the risk of flooding in your yard or driveway. Pairing gravel with a weed barrier fabric during installation can mitigate the risk of weed growth.

The best time to lay mulch depends on the type of mulch and the reason for installing it: 

  • Summer: Adding extra mulch helps soil retain moisture and keeps weeds at bay, allowing plants to thrive. 

  • Fall: Adding mulch helps control weeds and keeps soil and roots warm during the cooler months. Aim to add a layer of mulch 2 to 4 inches deep.

  • Winter: Mulch around perennial plants to help keep them insulated.

  • Spring: Wait until the ground has thawed. Depending on the thickness, add between 1 and 4 inches of mulch to provide freeze and rain protection and enrich the soil.

How much 4 yards of dirt will cover depends on how deep you want the soil to be. In general, a yard of dirt will cover 324 square feet for a 1-inch depth or 100 square feet for a 3-inch depth. Therefore, you can expect 4 yards to cover between 400 and 1,296 square feet if you keep your soil depth between 1 and 3 inches.
