"I interviewed 3 different water purification companies, because having safe, good water is one of THE MOST IMPORTANT investments we can make in our home and for our good health (both in the short term AND in the long term). My urgent (because of my timetable) inquiry to the companies was for an estimate to install a Reverse Osmosis (RO) Purification System, knowing that was my base cost, but also knowing Iâ d inquire about the other water systems at the time of the inquiry. We have purification systems at 3 homes, therefore I know costs and some aspect of the business practices. The owners of Water Air and You, Mr and Mrs Les Strong, heard the urgency in my situation in a new condo in Peoria, and came to visit immediately. They explained that to truly purify the water, that is, to achieve the level of pure water that I wanted, the mechanism would involve 3 systems, but NOT to panic, because the price would be very good, I am a cancer surgeon at a university in Tampa, FL,, and Les and Judy conveyed warmth, encouragement, and sound information about water treatment systems. Their estimate was very fair, very comparable with what our other water treatment systems cost in Florida and in our other Home. Their company is the ONLY company that did not take advantage of our desperate timetable and needs. The installer for Water, Air and You, Phil, was just as professional and kind and knowledgeable as the owners, although his assistant was not so on par with the others. Iâ m still amazed that I almost chose the first company to respond to my request for an estimate, though it was over 3x the cost I expected for the the RO system installation ALONE. I am so glad I restrained the impulse to just â get it done.â Les and his amazing team (â ¦. ESPECIALLY Judy, his Superlady-wife) were out to visit our newly purchased condo, the very next day, and they installed the systems the following day. The professionals (â ¦ at every level) at Water Air and You listen carefully and work ever so diligently, to educate their customers about water (ie the sources of city-water, governmental mechanisms of water treatment, and why after-care of this â cleanâ water (â ¦ and I use therm VERY loosely, here) is so absolutely imperative. Les and Judy explained how different water treatment systems work and work together, to make your water safe, delicious, and enjoyable. Les and Judy entered our home with warmth, kindness, invaluable information, and absolutely NO PRESSURE, just information and options. I cannot speak highly enough about them or their company. Phil, the installer, was especially respectful of our needs, was very attentive to any drill holes and such, and he carefully cleaned up his installation debris. The company, Water Air and You, is truly one of the rare and pure examples of an honest, hard working business, holding up â old-schoolâ values, traditions, and business practices."

"Was surprised to get a response as quickly as I did. Even more surprised that he was able to complete the job the next day. Plumbers in this area are few and far between. We have a lot of iron in our water so this system has a third tank that addresses this issue instead of a small filter that we had to replace quite frequently."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Hard water is not considered unhealthy and is safe to drink, cook with, and bathe in. It doesn't pose a risk to your physical health and can even help you get enough essential minerals like calcium in your diet. However, it can negatively affect skin and hair. Using hard water for washing can contribute to dry skin, an itchy scalp, and may worsen conditions like eczema by altering the pH balance. Additionally, some people do not like the taste of hard water.

To get utilities set up on a property, you first have to contact the local department of planning to determine whether your property is able to connect to public utilities. From there, you can work with a structural engineer and/or a building contractor to design the layout of utility lines on the property. The pros will need this information as they begin securing building permits before they can start adding lines.

If your property isn’t able to connect to public utilities, you’ll need to consider working with pros to develop a comfortable off-grid home that will meet your needs.

Whether you need a license or permit for water softener installation depends on your location. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, while others may only require a permit and an inspection. In some cases, both a permit and a licensed installer are necessary, and some areas have no requirements at all. Often, only certified plumbers and electricians are allowed to pull the necessary permits. To find out the specific regulations in your area, you can contact your local building department. Alternatively, a local water softener installer or plumber will be familiar with the requirements and can typically pull the permits for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use tools like Angi’s state licensing tool to verify an installer's license status.

The chemicals in a water softener can wear down the anode rod in the heater and shorten its life span. However, for most people, the benefits of the softener outweigh this potential drawback.

Have a plumber inspect the anode rod annually for damage, as replacing the anode rod is far less expensive than replacing the entire water heater.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.
