"I’ve worked with a lot of contractors, several different types of work, and none of them. Absolutely none of them took as much pride in their work and doing an excellent job. Not good. EXCELLENT. As the crew at Trinity Quality Paint. I’d recommend, hire again, and show their work off anytime to anyone."

Hey everyone My name is Jimmy. I recently graduated from UW Whitewater, and I am finally starting my own painting business. I have been in the painting business for over 3 years now, and painted 50+ homes in the Janesville, Milton, Delavan, and Rockford area. We can paint any project, doesn't matter if its a Victorian house, warehouse, or a small bedroom. I am new to the game, so my crew and I need all the work we can get. Therefore, if you are looking for a contractor that is organized, will keep you updated, and calls back in a timely manner, I'm your guy.

Painting questions, answered by experts

Many people choose to paint the walls first for a few reasons. First, it can provide a sense of accomplishment and motivation to tackle the rest of the room. Second, starting with the walls allows for more forgiveness of small mistakes. You can paint right up to the edge of the trim and easily cover up any accidental paint drops later. On the other hand, if you start with the trim, you need to be more precise to avoid any splatters on the walls.

The type of paint and finish you choose impacts the overall cost of your painting project. Some of the most common types of paint include:

  • Primer: $10–$20 per gallon

  • Flat or matte finish: $10–$70 per gallon

  • Eggshell or satin finish: $12–$72 per gallon

  • Semi-gloss finish: $14–$74 per gallon

  • High-gloss finish: $16–$76 per gallon

The two most common paint types are latex-based paint and oil-based paint. Here are some of the most significant differences between the two:

Latex-based paint:

  • $15–$60 per gallon on average

  • Best for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways

  • Dries more quickly than oil-based paints

  • More difficult to clean compared to oil-based paint

Oil-based paint

  • $20–$70 per gallon on average

  • Good for bathrooms, kitchens, doors, and trim

  • Easy to clean and holds up well against moisture

  • More likely to chip than latex-based paint

  • Requires good ventilation while drying

A whole-house color palette often has between five and seven colors. Those include the trim color that appears throughout your home, a foundation color for your main living areas, secondary colors for each bedroom, and accent colors, which are close to your foundation or secondary colors. Smaller homes under 1,000 square feet may just have four or five colors, while larger homes can have ten or more and still look cohesive.

You should use three coats of paint when applying to a heavily textured or porous surface. Sometimes painting a lighter color over a darker color requires three coats of paint or more to achieve full, even coverage. Trim or baseboards should also get three coats of paint.
