"My husband and I used Johnel from All Star Painting in 2021 to remodel two bathrooms- one primary and one half bath. I’m finally posting this review after wrestling with my conscience for far too long. While Johnel was extremely friendly and easy to talk to, the attention to detail from him and some of his team was seriously lacking in a lot of places. Examples include setting the temp gauge on the shower backwards (so it went from hot to cold), installing a chrome-colored drain when all our hardware was black, scratching up our new toilet seats by setting their tools directly on them, using a sticky clear caulk around the toilet that attracted dust and dirt. But wait, there’s more… The most irritating thing is the way the master bath flooring turned out. The grout has been crumbling since day one. I let Johnel know and he sent someone to patch, but the whole thing needs to be redone as it continues to crumble every day. Also, Johnel told my husband to return a tile sealant that the Tile Shop sold us, so our matte white ceramic tile is riddled with gray stains from the gray grout we chose. The original man working on our bathroom was somewhat communicative and took his time. When the job appeared to be running behind schedule, Johnel sent in some other dude who did the crappy job on the floor, including chipping one of the tiles, which we had to ask to be replaced. Oh and that replacement tile, not level, so every time I step on it it makes a cracking sound and more grout breaks loose. To add to our displeasure, we chose a combination of white grout for the shower walls and gray grout for the shower floor. The way the grout was applied, the gray bleeds into the white at every joint, making it look dirty or moldy. The gray grout on the floor is inconsistent in color- turned whitish in spots as it cured. Also, the clear caulk they used on the shower wall joints over the white grout quickly turned yellow. I mean, what’s the point in laying tile so carefully and then rushing to grout and caulk it all together that it just looks sloppy? Also, when we noticed that we could see the old beige paint through the new white paint, we asked Johnel to send the painter back, to which he told us if it took more than one more coat, we’d be charged extra. This was white over beige, not dark brown, black, or navy. Just a regular light beige. I would think a painter could cover this with two good coats if it had been done right and with care. Fortunately, one more coat did the trick. After 9 months, our shower door started jamming. That’s when my husband informed me that the crew didn’t save any of the paperwork or warranty information – they threw everything away. How convenient. After 10 months, one of the new toilets is leaking water onto the floor. Was set below the tile resulting in a bad seal. Cost us $250 to have a plumber come out and reset. We also ended up paying someone $200 to remove the yellowed caulk and recaulk in white. I would not recommend these guys, unfortunately. We're pretty bummed with how things turned out and are having a hard time finding someone to just come replace the bathroom floor. Referrals welcome!"

Classic Floors Chicago offers an excellent professional service, with 16 years of experience in chicagoland area. We are always at your service ready to guide you on the choice of product, design, application, use and maintenance of your hardwood floors.

"Florent came out quickly for an estimate. He quoted me a great price and then lowered it TWICE by finding different ways of approaching needed repairs. His crew was punctual, professional and wardworking. They made sample squiares of stain right on my floor and helped me pick a color. They started right when I needed them to and got the work done quickly. My floors look amazing."

FAQs for contractor service projects in Franklin Park, IL

Generally, general contractors charge between $50 and $150 hourly, though not every contractor charges by the hour. If charging based on the project, you can expect a markup of 10% to 20% of the construction cost. You can expect to pay between $300 and $500 daily if charged by the day.

General contractors are the ones that coordinate home construction projects. They are in charge of the day-to-day oversight of the subcontractors to ensure that the project is completed on time and to resolve problems as they arise. General contractors:

  • Complete pre-construction planning, both with the customer and crew

  • Provide realistic cost estimates

  • Develop construction timelines

  • Ensure deadlines are met

  • Acquire permits as needed

  • Purchase supplies and materials

Before hiring a general contractor for your home project, it’s a great idea to write down a list of questions to discuss with each prospect. Some example questions to get you started include:

  • Which types of insurance do you carry?

  • Can you provide a list of references?

  • What is the expected timeline for this project?

  • How will my project be supervised?

  • Will you hire subcontractors for the job?

  • What is the best way to communicate changes?

  • Will you obtain all of the required building permits?

While city and state laws vary on general contractor licensing requirements, hiring an unlicensed general contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines for your area.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

Yes, most general contractors require a down payment for project completion. A reasonable down payment for a contractor is 10% to 25% of the total project cost, though that will vary based on project size and location. The down payment helps cover the upfront costs of materials and permits and helps ensure payment for the project at hand.
