"The company was paid to diagnose and fix a leak to my roof. They determined that a small patch of roof needed to be replaced. A couple of weeks later the leak continued from the same spot in the ceiling. The tech again came out and claimed it was another leak in a different spot although the leak inside was in the exact same spot. They did not fix the problem the first time and wanted more money for this “new leak.”"

It might seem counterintuitive, but installing a generator transfer switch will save you money in the long run. If you connect your generator to your home without a transfer switch, the generated power can backfeed, essentially flowing back into the utility lines. Backfeeding exposes a significant threat of fatalities or harm to you and utility personnel, in addition to jeopardizing the structural integrity of your home.

In many cases, you’ll need a permit or basic inspection to install one of these large generators. Since they include significant alterations to your home electrical system and many produce exhaust fumes, local governments often require jumping through a few hoops for general safety purposes. Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

While natural gas generators emit lower levels of CO than other fuel sources, there are still ways to reduce emission levels.
