"Did a great job. Prompt visit to do estimate and timely scheduling. Came and did work and there was an issue with surface after it dried (invisible until next day). Messaged their office and they were back 2 days later and fully remedied the issue by re-grinding and applying material from a different batch. They resurfaced a porch that was spalling and it perfectly matches the stairs. Very friendly and cleaned up job site nicely."

"They installed chair rails and wainscotting. They were helpful in helping us match the existing trim in our house and suggested different materials we could use."

Glass Block questions, answered by experts

Build your seasonal routine for glass block service around the distinct IL climate. In spring, inspect mortar joints for winter freeze-thaw cracks and clear all weep holes. Following summer storms, check for shifted panels or humidity leaks. Fall is your most critical window to seal any cracks before freezing temperatures arrive. During winter, monitor the interior glass faces for condensation and keep exterior ground-level openings clear of packed snow.

Helpful?

You should keep specific tools on hand for maintaining glass block service in Chicago. Stock a mortar mix that matches your existing masonry, alongside a cold chisel and grout saw for tuckpointing. Keep exterior silicone caulk rated for extreme temperatures to maintain perimeter seals. Use a stiff-bristle brush for removing efflorescence and a thin wire brush to clear weep holes. A moisture meter helps detect hidden water infiltration early.

Helpful?

When planning glass block service, consider local egress requirements for basement bedrooms, as standard blocks do not meet city escape codes. Homes in historic Chicago districts require special approval for exterior modifications. Multi-unit buildings trigger additional permit requirements. You must also account for seasonal foundation shifting caused by expansive clay soils in IL. Finally, test for lead paint and asbestos before disturbing window surrounds in pre-1980 homes.

Helpful?

For a standard basement window, completing glass block service takes one to four hours of physical work. Larger projects require one to two full days. In Chicago, permit processing adds five to 15 business days before work begins. During the peak construction season from May to October, expect a two- to four-week lead time. Winter weather in IL drops below 40 degrees, which delays mortar curing and extends project timelines.

Helpful?

Maintaining glass block service installations requires tuckpointing mortar joints damaged by frequent freeze-thaw cycles. You must use lime-based mortar for historic masonry to prevent surrounding brick damage. Keep drainage weep holes clear of debris to prevent basement water infiltration during heavy Chicago rains. Scrub away white efflorescence stains caused by high groundwater. Inspect silicone perimeter seals every two to three years and replace them every five to seven years.
