Sometimes when a pipe bursts in a house, it makes a clang or popping noise; however, that doesn’t mean you’ll hear it. Newer pipes tend to be quieter than older pipes. Plus, a pipe can easily burst out of earshot, especially if it’s a floor or two away from you. 

If you do hear an unusual popping noise, consider hiring a plumber to inspect your pipes. Most of the time, you’re more likely to notice a burst pipe either from a visible leak or because water won’t run out of your tap properly.

Flushing a water softener is another way to refer to a thorough cleaning of the system. The process involves several steps, including disconnecting electrical power from the system, physically draining the water and salt from the brine tank, scrubbing away deposits, putting the system back together, and performing a regeneration to clean the resin and resin tank.

That pesky faucet leak can have a few different causes, most of which are standard wear and tear that occurs over time, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying, especially when the energy bill hits:

  • Old washer: A deteriorated washer or gasket is the most common cause of a leak. Luckily, it’s easy and affordable to fix.

  • Old packing nut: There’s a chance the packing nut (located beneath the handle) is loose and simply needs tightening, or it has been worn down, stripped, and needs to be replaced.

  • Freezing temperatures: The water sitting in your spigot over winter can freeze, expand, and lead to damage and leaks.

  • High water pressure: High water pressure is hard on pipes over time and can cause cracks and leaks, too.

If there's no water coming out of the spigot, or barely any water, you might have a clogged water line. Areas with hard water are prone to this problem because the high mineral content in hard water causes build-up in pipes and water lines. This constricts the water flow and causes water to slowly trickle out, if at all.

The time it takes to fix a burst pipe depends on the location and severity of the problem. A minor burst can be cleared up in a day. But if more than one pipe burst or cracked, or the source of the burst and leak is more complex, it can take a week or longer for a licensed local plumber to fix it.
