"Archway Clean Sweep were great! I just wish I could have used their services. Cindy was very professional and friendly on the phone when I explained what I was needing and scheduled me efficiently. When the chimney sweep men came, they evaluated my chimney from the outside first and came to the door. He said he could do the sweep and charge me, but wouldn't recommend we burn a fire in our fireplace. He walked outside with me and showed me and explained the problems with the original build of the chimney, why it wasn't explained in our home-buying inspection and what would need to be done to correct it. He answered my questions and gave me a referral for a direct vent for a gas fireplace conversion that I asked him for. So refreshing to have a company come out who looked out for the safety of our home & family over making a quick buck. If I had cash, I would have a least given him a tip for the time he took to drive and talk with me. His knowledge was invaluable. We need more businesses like Archway Clean Sweep to take care of our homes!"

"We moved into our 40+ year old home in August of 2011. One of the recommendations on our home inspection was to have the chimney/cap reviewed by a professional because much of the mortar/bricks were soft and appeared to be in need of repair. Cut to St. Patrick?s day 2012, when St. Louis received quite the downpour and where flooding was fairly rampant. We hadn?t had any problems with the chimney up to that point, but our flue for the gas fireplace was still open because of the random weather we were having.  We could see water dripping into the chimney through the cement cap, and called and left a voicemail with Mirelli Tuckpointing that afternoon.

We didn?t hear back first thing on Monday because of a voicemail issue, but when I called to follow up that afternoon, I was told that the owner, John, would be by no later than Tuesday to provide an estimate. Sure enough, we received our estimate in the mail later that week, dated 3/20/12, and on Friday 3/23 accepted the proposal via email. We were told that scheduling was about one week of working weather out.

Early the next day (3/24/12), I received a call on my cell phone from Mr. Mirelli. He said that the chimney work was a perfect Saturday job and since there was no longer rain in the forecast, he could have someone over to complete the work shortly, if that worked out for us. We were going out of town and said that would work perfectly. Much of the work was completed before we left later that morning, and John?s employee finished up after we left.

We haven?t had any problems since, even after the many days of heavy rain that have followed, and the only negative I can speak of on the experience is that the cleanup of the job site could have been a little more thorough. There were pieces of brick and chunks of mortar on the walkway just outside our basement by the AC unit, which is just down from where the chimney is located. There was also a fair amount of mortar dust on the deck and atop the garbage cans on the side of the house near the garage, though I understand that is nearly unavoidable.

Long story short(ish), we know we have some additional tuckpointing to be completed on our home, and will be calling on Mirelli Tuckpointing again when the time comes to have that work completed.  We?ve already recommended them to friends and family, and my brother-in-law had a similarly good experience with Mirelli."

"Dillion and his crew repaired the back wall of my house by replacing bricks that were damaged and Tuckpointed it. I also hired them to repair my fireplace damper and to put a liner in my chimney flue. They did an amazing job, cleaned up, and finished in a timely manner."

"The workers and office staff were easy to talk to, well informed, courteous , and efficient. They performed a thorough inspection. Recommended and installed a stainless liner and cap for the furnace flue and a new damper on the fireplace flue. Their price was better than previous quotes and even set up a partial payment plan. I am very pleased with the work they did."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

To reset an electric fireplace, first shut the unit off using the control panel or remote control. Make sure the unit is entirely shut down, then unplug it from the power outlet. Wait five to 10 minutes, then plug the fireplace back in and turn it on. This process should reset the electric fireplace. After resetting, make sure to set the thermostat, timer, and other programmable settings to suit your preferences.

There is no universal remote that will work for all gas fireplaces or electric models. That’s because different remotes are designed to work with specific fireplace wiring, so some remotes may only work for on/off functions, while others work with fireplaces that have extra settings, such as timers or programmable thermostats. If you need a new remote, ensure the replacement is compatible with your specific fireplace model.

You can let a fire burn out in a fireplace as long as you or someone else will stick around to monitor it until it goes completely out. This may take several hours. To prepare, stop adding fuel to the fire well before you’re ready to call it a night. If you’re using the fireplace for warmth, you’ll want to cover up in some blankets as the flame dies down.

Most cleanings take 1-3 hours, but extensive soot buildup or liner damage may require additional time.

The primary disadvantage of a ventless fireplace is that it doesn’t have an exterior venting system. This means that the byproducts from combustion are emitted into your home, which raises some safety concerns. In addition, ventless gas fireplaces produce moisture as they burn—and if there’s no ventilation, you could end up with a mold problem.
