"The tuck pointing looks beautiful.  I'm so glad I went with Humes Masonry.   I've had tuck pointers do work in the past that left gouges in the bricks and I wasn't sure how much the job really strengthened  the brick work.   I have confidence this work done by Humes Masonry was worth my money and will last.

"Last fall I bought a house with a gas fireplace, and during the inspection it was noted the damper was blocked. The inspector thought that there was probably debris in the chimney causing the blockage. So I hired Absolute Clean to unblock and clean the chimney. They found that the blockage was caused not by debris but by a piece of mortar protruding from the masonry. In fact the chimney had probably never been used even though the house was 47 years old. So it turned out that there wasn't really a whole lot of chimney sweeping to do as far as build-up, but there was a little debris which they cleaned out, and they checked it to make sure that it was safe to use. They showed me how to turn it on safely and gave me some tips on positioning the logs, and where to buy gas logs if I wanted a different look. Very nice fellows.

"I had my chimney tuckpointed and settlement cracks ground and repaired in the exterior bricks of my home.  John, the owner, personally met with with me and we reviewed the scope of work together.  I also requested quotes from two other contractors.  John's quote was the lowest in cost but actually involved the most work.  Regarding the actual work, he did exactly what he said he was going to do.  The only additional amount charged was for a couple cans of wasp spray because they were nesting in the area of his work.  This was twelve dollars and he provided the receipt.  One of the other contractors said he would not even perform the work unless I had the wasps professionally exterminated - John took care of this himself.  This no nonsense approach to the work, fairness and attention to detail reminds me of the old school work ethic that was common in the building trades years ago.  Very satisfied and highly recommend."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Yes, you should seal and cap an unused chimney to protect it from damage. Sealing the structure helps prevent moisture damage, which can lead to issues like cracks, spalling, efflorescence, and damaged mortar joints. Capping the chimney is also crucial to prevent blockages, damage from invasive critters, and downdrafts, while still allowing for proper air ventilation to manage moisture. For the best results, consult a chimney professional to select the right type of chimney or flue cap for your home. It's also wise to continue with annual chimney inspections to maintain the structure's integrity.

Regular inspections, using dry wood, and installing chimney caps help maintain efficiency and safety.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective alternative to a traditional chimney, consider having a dummy chimney installed. Dummy chimneys can either be aesthetic-only or fully functional and can be installed on both new and older homes. Whether installed to match your neighborhood’s aesthetic or to vent your chimney, dummy chimneys are made out of a Glass-Reinforced Plastic (GRP) core, then covered with brick or stone slips to look like a traditional chimney.

Wood-burning fireplaces typically make homeowners insurance more expensive, simply because they increase the risk for a fire in your home. Gas and electric inserts are less likely to bring up your insurance rates, but you should always speak with your agent to understand how installing any type of fireplace will affect your premiums.

Certain fireplace repairs will require that your contractor is licensed, including anything that involves moving, installing, or repairing gas lines. In that case, your professional will need to be a certified plumber. You can use Angi’s licensing lookup tool to confirm that the company you’re hiring is properly licensed. Most states don’t have specific license requirements for other fireplace repairs, but most demand at least a general contractor’s license. It’s also a good idea to look for companies certified by the National Fireplace Institute, as those pros tend to be more qualified to carry out the repair.
