Before pressure washing, you can spray your deck lightly with a deck cleaning solution made of equal parts oxalic acid and water. Oxalic acid has a brightening effect that will lighten mold stains and return the deck to its original freshly-sawn look. Allow the solution to sit for about 20 minutes before pressure washing so it has time to take effect.
We don’t recommend pressuring washing clapboard siding. At high levels of pressure, a pressure washer can damage wood siding permanently. Pressure washing can also make it easier to drive water into the cracks of clapboard (which are recommended for easier drainage), causing moisture damage.
If you think your clapboard siding is so dirty it could benefit from pressure washing, we suggest contacting a pressure wash cleaning service and getting a quote on a wood siding project. Some siding manufacturers recommend never pressure washing because it can force water behind the siding.

Soft Woods and Certain Decking: Delicate surfaces like softwood, composite decking, and antique or wooden patio furniture can be etched or damaged. If you must wash wood, use a lower-powered pressure washer with a wide-angle nozzle to prevent damage.
Living Things: Never use a pressure washer on people, pets, or plants. The force can cause serious injury and will destroy landscaping.
Your deck may look or feel fuzzy after pressure washing because the high-pressure spray tears some wood fibers as it removes the outer layer of dead and discolored wood. This fuzzy effect is a normal part of the pressure-washing process and will go away on its own in a few weeks. You can opt to spot-sand your deck if you’d like to remove it more quickly.
Cedar shake siding requires regular cleaning, or else it will grow mold and algae. However, a pressure washer can easily damage your cedar shakes if the water pressure is too high.
