"The crew from Black Magic were quick and efficient, a joy to watch work. They took my scruffy gravel driveway from homely to gorgeous in just 2 days, removing the gravel (and moving it to my pile for later re-use), put down a sterile base with lime, and rolled out 3" asphalt like a well-oiled machine. They even expanded the driveway because it didn't look right the way they'd originally measured it, no additional charge. Also, a County flagger misdirected one of the trucks to a private road, damaging a neighbor's driveway. Black Magic fixed it better than before."

"I saw on my camera that they showed up to do my driveway. It looked like they were having some issues with machine. Krayden came on the 12th to get his check, but we expressed our concerns to him about some rocks showing on the asphalt. He said if there were concerns that he would come out and fix it. In April we saw that we had a bunch of weeds pop up through the asphalt quite significantly. We called him to let him know and it took some time to send someone out to pour weed killer in holes and spray black on top of that. Well we started having more weeds pop up through the asphalt and I called and he did not respond. I texted him to let him know that there were more weed spots and that he would come out and take a look and never did. I can't get him to respond. I also have rocks that are randomly popping out of the asphalt and the side of the asphalt is breaking away in sections. Like it is just melting away. I know he did paperwork and I don't have any copies of an official document like a contract. It is possible that he should have that on his end as to where they should keep paperwork on their jobs."

"Gaylen is Top Notch. Highest quality work, caring attitude, at the best price. Gaylen operates on a lot smaller margin than his competition. When Gaylen first gave us a bid, and described his work quality, I told my wife that I'd love to hire him, but there is no way we'll be able to afford him based off all the quality work he does. Then we got his bid, and it was cheaper than his competition. There is no way you can afford not to use him. We are one extremely happy customer, and would recommend him to everyone!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The decision to repair or replace your driveway depends on the extent of the damage. If your driveway has a few small cracks, a simple repair will do the trick. If you see larger cracks and potholes, it may be time to consider resurfacing or replacement. Resurfacing is a great option if more than 25% of the surface is damaged, but if the damage is extensive—deep cracks or significant sinking—it’s best to replace the driveway entirely. A new driveway, with proper care, can last decades while patching or resurfacing might only hold up for a few years before needing more attention.

Asphalt is made of aggregate materials (sand, rocks, and gravel) and bitumen, a viscous, petroleum-based, waterproof substance. These materials are mixed together at extremely high temperatures to form asphalt.

Asphalt driveways last anywhere from 15 to 30 years, but if you don’t stay on top of repairs, you may find yourself spending extra to replace your driveway before its typical lifespan. Stay on top of repairing cracks and potholes by routinely inspecting your driveway once or twice a year. It’s a good idea to pressure wash your asphalt driveway at least once a year to keep it clean. Apply a sealer every one to five years, based on your climate.

If your driveway is cracked, you can repave it with a process called asphalt overlay. Overlay is more cost-effective than a full replacement but is better suited for minor cracks and issues. If you have major cracks or other problems like water pooling, asphalt overlay isn’t your best bet. Plus, paving over a cracked driveway only extends the lifetime by about 10 years, whereas replacing it would start the clock over completely to give you up to 30 years.

In the United States, roads are usually categorized as one of three types: public roads, other drivable roads, and non-drivable roads. These categories dictate how a road can be used; a non-drivable road might be classified that way because it is heavily damaged and unsafe for cars.
