"Carson and his crew are top notch! They worked really hard on trimming our trees until everything was just what we wanted. We also ordered wood for fire burning and it was delivered quickly, and was split perfectly. We are so grateful for Superposition because we know we can count on them to help us get through long cold winters! Thank you so very much Superposition team for being amazing!!"

"We hired ZR to prep an area for concrete and also to grade our lot. Both were done extremely well. We had a flooding rainstorm this week, but it all flowed away from the house and pooled around the edges of our lot thanks to the grading being done correctly. Jesse was timely coming to give an estimate and performing the work. Pricing was fair and a little lower than some. We are very happy with ZR"

"Rocky Mountain Sealers came the day I called and gave me a bid that day. I appreciated their promptness. They were also prompt and came the day they said they would to seal my driveway. My concern is that the seal coat they applied has several small cracks in it, mostly in places where my driveway was indented from so much wear and tear, and the seal coat was laid on quite thick, but there are also many small cracks in it in level places. I called them with my concerns and they came back and fixed the worst of the cracks a few days later, but there are quite a few cracks left, and I am concerned that the cracks that are still there will allow water to seep in and freeze during the winter months, causing the seal coat to peel off, or be scraped off when we shovel during the winter months."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Building a road on a slope requires careful planning and will normally require a drainage system underneath to prevent flooding and damage to the road over time. Your professional may lengthen your road to create switchbacks if the slope directly to your home is too steep, as there are regulations for maximum road slope. The drainage system will help prevent runoff from the higher side of the slope from damaging the asphalt or concrete. Keep in mind that building a road on a slope isn’t a good DIY project, as a lot can go wrong.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

A driveway approach is the part of a driveway where the public road meets the private driveway. This section contains several key elements, including the driveway apron, the curb cut, and the end slope. Depending on the slope of the driveway, this area may also contain the trench drain.

When hiring an asphalt paving contractor to install your driveway, ask as many questions up front as possible. Here are a few questions to ask a prospective driveway contractor:

  • How many years of experience do you have?

  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

  • Do you have worker’s compensation?

  • Do you use subcontractors on your projects?

  • Do you clean up after the job is done?

  • Who is responsible for any damage to lawn or landscaping?

  • Do you provide a guarantee or warranty on your work?

  • Do you give free estimates?

  • What is the timeline for completion?

  • How do you handle change orders?

  • Can you provide at least three references?

  • Can I see some of the work you’ve done?

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.
