"The furniture moving itself went just fine and was done very professionally. There seemed to be some confusion when we called the day before to confirm that they would be coming the next day. However, that issue got ironed out. There was also some issue with their coming the second time as they were going to be out of state on another job when we wanted them to come back. They worked that out, however, to our satisfaction. Pricewise, their hourly rate was very reasonable and they do not charge for "drive time" as some other movers do. They do have a three hour minimum for each job, which in our case involved us paying the minimum twice. This amounted to us paying for six hours for two jobs which only took an hour each time. They handled every thing with care so basically, we were satisfied and would use them again. Wish they could work something out for jobs like ours where only a few heavy pieces needed to be moved and they don't even need to use their truck, just their hand cart. They do have a discount for Angie's List members."

Piano Moving questions, answered by experts

Moving a one-bedroom apartment yourself can range from $150 to more than $1,500, depending on distance, the amount of belongings you have, and more. On the other hand, the cost of hiring movers for a one-bedroom apartment is around $1,850 on average. You’ll save money with the DIY route, but the process is much more labor-intensive and time-consuming.

The first step to choosing a relocation company is determining the distance of your move, types of services needed, and how many professional movers you need to hire. Once you set the parameter of your move, get price quotes from at least three local moving companies to compare pricing. Then, choose a relocation company that fits within your budget, supplies the necessary services, and has positive reviews from previous moving customers.

Most professional movers can provide a wide range of moving-related services, and you’ll need to pick and choose which ones you want to use. Examples of common services offered include the following:

  • Organizing and packing your belongings

  • Protecting delicate items with bubble wrap or other protective equipment

  • Moving your belongings and furniture out of your old home

  • Moving your belongings into your new home within a certain distance

  • Unpacking your belongings in the new location

  • Moving heavy items, like pianos

  • Moving your vehicles

  • Storage if your new home isn’t ready

Old pianos can be hard to sell for a few reasons. Pianos fifty years or older may only sell for several hundred dollars and will often cost more to transport to the new owners. Restoring a piano also costs well into the thousands, making it pretty hard to make your money back. In most cases, donating or recycling the parts of a piano is more cost-efficient and beneficial in the long run.

It is best to book a moving company two to three months before your move-out date. This provides enough time to compare rates, organize your belongings, and find an available crew for your desired day and time. While you might find movers with only one or two weeks' notice, some companies require booking up to 90 days in advance.

Planning ahead is especially important if you're moving during the busy summer season when demand is highest. Summer weekends, in particular, book up quickly. Securing your movers well in advance helps you avoid the stress and potential extra fees of last-minute arrangements.
