YOUNG MAN WAS VERY NICE, POLITE. HE DID TELL ME THAT IT WOULD COST MORE BECAUSE DUCTS WERE SO DIRTY AND DID SHOW ME THE RESULTS. HAVING HAD SEVERAL DOGS OVER THE YEARS, I WASN'T SURPRISED. IT ALSO TOOK LONGER BECAUSE SOME VENTS WERE HARDER TO REACH--OLD HOUSE.

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends cleaning air ducts every three to eight years for efficiency and durability.

There are a few ways to determine if a vent is open or closed. You can inspect the vent and examine the position of the fins. If there are spaces between them, the vent is open. If the fins are flat and touching, the vent is closed. You can also stand under the vent when the system is running to see if you feel air flowing through it.

Return air ducts shouldn't be installed in closets, bathrooms, garages, kitchens, boiler rooms, furnace rooms, and attics. Kitchens can have return ducts if they only serve that kitchen and are at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances. Similarly, return ducts can only be installed in garages if they're part of a forced-air system that only serves the garage.

No, not all houses have ducts. It would be safe to say, however, that most modern houses do. The reason is that older houses had boilers in the basement that heated from the bottom up and often vents weren’t built into the house. Another reason is that older homes don’t have air conditioning (because it didn’t exist) and use radiators for heating. Since radiators don’t require ductwork, it wasn’t built.
