He called and asked if we preferred to delay (but said he'd be right over if we wanted the appointment). We rescheduled for two days later when it was snowing lightly. He called again to ask if we wanted him to come and we said, "sure". He was very careful not to track in snow even though he had to make several trips in and out. A door swells up when there’s a lot of moisture in the air. Wood doors are porous, and the elements can cause them to expand with humidity and contract with dry air. Prevent swelling by coating the door in weather-resistant paint, which creates a barrier to seal out moisture. Otherwise, go with a water-repellent finish after the fact. You can attach the hinges to either the door or the frame first, depending on your preference. The order will not affect how the door hangs or the ease of installation. However, we recommend starting with the top hinge over the bottom one for stability, as it’s much easier to support the door from below while you install the top hinge. It will also be easier to pull the door outward from the hinges as it hangs from the top than it would be to push the door toward the hinges, as there’s less clearance on the lock side.

You have several options when choosing the best lumber for your door jamb. Pine is the most common material due to its resistance to swelling. Fir is strong and durable. You could also go with birch or alder. Any wood with a tight grain will work for this project.

The lock block will either be built-in on the side of the door or run from the top to the bottom. Usually, there is a marking that indicates its location. You can also tap the door with the back of a screwdriver to find the lock block like you would find a stud in a wall.
