I do everything inside and out. I have 7 years of carpentry experience and have worked as a carpenter in the military. I can do stairs, decks, siding, cabinets, trim, doors, windows, shelving, some auto repairs, anything else you can name. I will also build furniture, cutting boards, or any other specialty items. I am married with 2 children and I am currently a full time Firefighter with 2 out of 3 days off so I have plenty of time to work for you.

The term cupboards began in the Middle Ages to describe pieces of furniture that had open shelves and were used to display cups and plates. Today, they’re used less for display and more for concealed storage of a wide variety of items, from special occasion dishware to bedding or other linens.

When deciding between stripping or sanding kitchen cabinets, the short answer is it depends on the condition of your cabinets and your end goal for them. If the cabinets are in fairly good condition and don’t have several layers of paint on them, sanding is a good option. All inset cabinets are face frame cabinets, but not all face frame cabinets are inset cabinets. You have three main cabinet door styles to choose from with face frame cabinets: inset, partial overlay, or full overlay. With inset cabinets, the doors and drawers are mounted inside the face frames, so the fronts of the cabinets are flush when everything is closed.

For most purposes, you should go with wood that’s at least 3/4-inch thick for DIY closet shelves. This is the standard thickness for solid wood or MDF shelving and should be able to hold a good amount of weight (around 80 pounds for MDF and 130 pounds for plywood). If you’re storing tools, camera equipment, or other heavier items, you can go up to 1 1/4-inch thickness for maximum strength and durability.

Buying a kitchen cabinet or finding an experienced cabinet maker is likely going to be your best option unless you have the necessary experience and woodworking skills. If you’re just replacing one cabinet base or one cabinet, making your own is entirely possible and more effective, assuming you have the right equipment.
