We started as a rental property/landlord company in 2007. After having countless issues with finding reliable, reasonable and ethical contractors, we started our own contracting service. We understand the problems homeowners face in finding a skilled contractor who will provide a timely bid, follow through with the timeline presented and charge according to promised bid or hourly rate. Greg Schenck has worked in all facets of home improvement for 20 years and if not directly doing the improvements himself, is on site to supervise any contracted labor directly, working alongside them. All labor costs are communicated up front with bids in writing and all receipts for materials are provided directly to the homeowner (no loading material costs). We are partnered with a real estate appraisal firm which provides consulting services to assist homeowners in determining which improvements will add value to a home and which may not.

We are a husband and wife team handling a wide variety of construction and home improvement jobs. Most jobs can be completed by us but for certain jobs that require licensing (Plumbers/Electricians/HVAC), or we aren't able to provide at a cost-effective rate ourselves, we have established a list of trustworthy contractors that we have worked with on many jobs. With over 10 years of experience in the home improvement/construction business we have the knowledge and skills to get your job done right the first time. We are also both licensed Realtors and have a broad knowledge on the subjects of real estate and how a good remodel or home improvement job can increase the value of your investment.

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, professional installations include reinforced corner posts to ensure durability.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

While most house creaking is expected to some extent and under normal conditions, it's not a good idea to ignore new noises. If other problems accompany the creakiness, like cement cracks, wobbly or loose stair components, or moving trimwork, it's time to look into the potential for foundation trouble or other structural problems.

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.
