Customers say: Quick response

"I have always done my own snowblowing and shoveling but decided this year to explore hiring someone for the heavy snows. I contacted Scott at The Ground Guys of Iowa City and he was immediately responsive to my call. So many times I have had to wait days for return calls (or no return call at all from other service or home repair companies), so I was thrilled to have Scott answer the call and subsequently provide a quote the do snow removal the same day I called. I decided to give them a try and am so glad I did. Scott provides excellent customer service and will make multiple trips on heavy snowfalls to ensure the snow is removed. He is accommodating to my schedule and will work to ensure the snow is removed in a timely manner. He also will provide ice melt, which after a round of freezing rain proved to be a lifesaver this winter! I highly recommend The Ground Guys of Iowa City for snow removal. I am a very happy customer and will continue to use their services!"

Small jobs welcome

"My wife and I had some horrendous super weeds take off in our flower beds . All around the house, and out of control crabgrass in our ditches. I hired Nick and we made a game plan on what was most cost effective and best for our circumstances. We live next to crops, and have a dog. Obviously have water ways needing treatment. So a lot of little nuances going on there. Nick came back with proper research and sprayed accordingly to each situation. Then his crew and him removed the excess vegetation and even som small trees that had come in by squirrels or birds. We have a set game plan for the future of the project and bigger plans next year! He was even able to work around my hectic schedule for what was best for our household. Thanks Nick and crew!"

Leaf Removal questions, answered by experts

If your roof was constructed between 1930 and 1970, there’s a possibility that the shingles contain asbestos. If that’s the case, you should hire a professional for repairs and replacement, as they’ll have the necessary equipment to stay safe from such a hazardous and cancer-causing substance. If your home was constructed after this period, it’s unlikely that the shingles in place are toxic. In most cases, asbestos shingles are not recyclable, while standard asphalt shingles are recyclable.

Professionals use appropriate equipment to prevent property damage and ensure efficiency.

The best disposal method for hazardous waste is recycling or donation, if possible. That way, the world can reduce its consumption of raw materials and the volume at which materials have to be treated and disposed of. If recycling or donation is not an option, most waste can be disposed of through landfills or incinerators, but their collection and treatment are separate from regular day-to-day waste disposal.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), hazardous waste is generally classified into four main categories:

1. Characteristic Wastes: These exhibit at least one of four hazardous traits: ignitability (flammable, like gasoline), corrosivity (can rust or decompose materials, like car batteries), reactivity (unstable and can explode, like aerosol cans), or toxicity (harmful when ingested, like lead-based paint).

2. Listed Wastes: These are specific wastes from manufacturing and industrial processes that the EPA has officially designated as hazardous. They include byproducts from processes that use solvents, pesticides, and other chemicals.

3. Universal Wastes: These are commonly generated hazardous items that are subject to streamlined regulations. Examples include batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing equipment (e.g., bulbs), and some lamps.

4. Mixed Wastes: This category includes waste that contains both hazardous and radioactive components, making it subject to regulation by both the EPA and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Lead removal can take a few days to several weeks, depending on the work needed, particularly if the lead is widespread and in hard-to-reach areas.
