"My father is 93 and has had all his heating and coolling service provided by Schaal for over 25 years. Recently his central air quit working. He called Schaal and the estimate was WAY too high- they suggested replacing the entire unit.-My husband heard about it, called Bell Brothers and they came out quickly, assesed the situation and discovered that only the condenser needed to be replaced. They gave an estimate- about 1/4 of what Schaal had quoted him-Bell Brothers did the work quickly, stayed true to their estimate and the A/C is in perfect working order. I was very upset that Schaal seemed to try and take advantage of an elderly gentleman. Bell Brothers was So kind to him  aaaaaaandthey fixed the problem for MUCH less money. We are nowa Bell Brothers family!!!

"They did a good job. They gave me a $40 discount since my ducts were not very dirty. My only comment is they left some particles of dry wall chips on my floor and did not vacuum them up."

"Did excellent work and left me in a better place than I started - no more leaks! Substandard work had been done on the roof prior to buying the house, they found everything wrong and fixed it how it should have been."

"We received a great explanation about the options we have that fit our home, everything was very clear and simple we were happy with Jon proposal and we choose Service Legends to replace our HVAC system. The replacement of the old unit was done very professionally, fast and they care and respect of our property, Steven did a very great job and also take time to answer our question about our new units and the simple maintenance required. Everyone at Service legends was great and the name of the company clearly reflect the people the work for them."

"Excellent service which provided outstanding results.  Computer was running so slow my wife wanted me to buy another computer.  Using Angies List I was able to find this company who I called right away.  I made arrangements to drop off my laptop on Friday night and was able to pick it back up Sunday afternoon.  Took it home and it runs just like the day i bought it.  James loaded virus protection software which works better than the software I bought.  Very goodexperience, i will use him again.

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

While Freon is mostly odorless, a Freon leak will produce a faint chloroform-like smell. Some people find that Freon's odor has a subtle sweetness to it. Some telltale signs of a Freon leak beyond odor include ice crystals on your evaporator coil, bubbling sounds, and hissing noises.

No, for two very important reasons. First, it’s illegal to release refrigerant into the air or ground since it can be toxic and cause environmental damage. Technicians typically pump old or extra refrigerant into separate tanks for special disposal. Second, without professional equipment to read refrigerant pressure and levels, plus the AC’s suggested requirements, it’s impossible to know if you’ve removed the right amount of refrigerant. Stay away from a DIY solution here and seek an expert with the right tools.

On average, an AC unit lasts between 10 and 20 years. However, the specific lifespan depends on the type of unit, how often it's used, the local climate, and the quality of maintenance. Central AC units typically last 12 to 17 years, while window units have a shorter lifespan of 8 to 10 years. Portable AC units last about 5 to 10 years, and ductless mini-split systems can last up to 20 years. To extend the life of your AC unit, it's important to perform regular maintenance, such as replacing filters, cleaning coils, and scheduling annual professional tune-ups.

This depends on the extent of the freezing. Some ACs only need an hour or two to thaw out, but others may need a full day to completely unfreeze. Once you turn off the system to let it unfreeze, check it periodically to make sure the drain pan doesn’t overflow. When you turn the system back on, keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t start freezing again.

AC capacitors have a wide lifespan, ranging from five to 20 years, with an average of about 10 years. Many capacitors will last for the entire life of the air conditioning unit, and most homeowners only need to replace one once. A capacitor should only be replaced if an HVAC professional diagnoses a problem with it. Premature failure can be caused by overheating, power surges, or short circuits. You can help extend the life of your AC capacitor by scheduling regular AC maintenance each year.
