"My father is 93 and has had all his heating and coolling service provided by Schaal for over 25 years. Recently his central air quit working. He called Schaal and the estimate was WAY too high- they suggested replacing the entire unit.-My husband heard about it, called Bell Brothers and they came out quickly, assesed the situation and discovered that only the condenser needed to be replaced. They gave an estimate- about 1/4 of what Schaal had quoted him-Bell Brothers did the work quickly, stayed true to their estimate and the A/C is in perfect working order. I was very upset that Schaal seemed to try and take advantage of an elderly gentleman. Bell Brothers was So kind to him  aaaaaaandthey fixed the problem for MUCH less money. We are nowa Bell Brothers family!!!

"They did a good job. They gave me a $40 discount since my ducts were not very dirty. My only comment is they left some particles of dry wall chips on my floor and did not vacuum them up."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

A home AC unit provides anywhere from one-half to five tons of cooling and requires approximately two to four pounds of refrigerant per ton of cooling. At approximately five to 10 minutes to fill one pound of refrigerant, a home that requires three tons of cooling will take about six to 12 pounds of refrigerant and approximately 30 minutes to two hours to completely recharge the unit.

Yes, you can run an attic fan with the AC on. In fact, you don’t have a choice with a passive attic fan. Plus, when an attic fan draws out hot air from the attic, it helps regulate the temperature of your whole home, so your AC doesn't have to work as hard.

Yes, scorpions can enter a home through AC vents, especially if the system is not well-sealed. As excellent climbers, they can scale a home's exterior and squeeze through gaps as small as 1/16 of an inch. Scorpions are often attracted to the moisture around air conditioning ducts or seek cooler areas during hot weather, using vents as a pathway inside. They may slip through small openings where the duct meets the vent cover and travel within walls before emerging. To prevent this, inspect your vents, seal any gaps, and consider installing fine mesh screens.

No, a furnace is not the same thing as an AC, or air conditioner, but these are both parts of an HVAC system. They both use air ducts to transport cool or hot air around your home to achieve a comfortable temperature set by your thermostat. An AC runs on electricity, while a furnace can use different fuel sources.

The best way to compare HVAC quotes is getting a few detailed quotes from local companies with good reputations. Then, go over the quotes line by line. Protect yourself by insisting on in-person estimates that include equipment manufacturer names, model numbers, SEER ratings, amounts and numbers of materials, details of warranties on equipment and labor, and other specifics.

Knowing the exact equipment and materials is the only way that you can fairly compare quotes. Quotes that are much lower than others can be a sign that the company isn’t providing the best quality service or materials.
