"I would highly recomend Precision Comfort. My furnace went down about a week ago. I conducted my own research into troubleshooting a furnace. I determined myself to be 90% sure of the issue effecting my furnace. Not having the time to repair the furnace, I researched HVAC companies. Precision Comfort reviews won, and they were dead on. Great service. Personable, competent. There was ample opportunity to gouge me, possibly make unnecessary repairs to rob me further. That DID NOT happen. Im a firefighter in Des Moines and know when a person is good.Precision Comfort is much better than good."

"We've never hired an electrician before so the price was a shock to us. Our electrician was very informative as to what he was doing and why and gave us choices before performing the work. He was clean and polite and friendly. He gave us the impression that he truly wanted our satisfaction and that he enjoyed his job."

"David and Aaron provided quality workmanship for our needs. David looked over the area and made several recommendations we should do before installing new appliances. He determined a couple of issues before the work began. Aaron attached a surge protector to our meter and installed new wiring that matches our incoming appliances. They were both very polite during their work. Keith"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, HVAC zoning systems offer energy savings by allowing precise temperature control in different zones in your home. Rather than conditioning the whole house uniformly, these systems direct airflow where needed, preventing energy waste. Tailoring comfort to specific areas reduces energy consumption and lowers utility costs, making HVAC zoning an energy-efficient choice.

To diagnose a bad HVAC or AC damper, assess the airflow from your vents. For a manual damper, close it, run your system, and check for airflow. If air is still coming through the vents, the damper is likely faulty and needs repair or replacement. For an automatic damper, turn on your HVAC system and monitor the airflow and room temperature. Signs of a problem include low airflow, a room that won't maintain its set temperature, or a drafty feeling. If you suspect a faulty automatic damper, you may need to hire a professional for repairs.

While it is possible to add Freon to your AC unit yourself, it is not recommended. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) prohibits the handling of Freon without a license. Freon is a dangerous gas that can cause irreversible damage to your AC or yourself if not installed correctly. It is worthwhile to hire a professional to add Freon to your AC.

The general rule of thumb for figuring out how much AC tonnage you need in your home is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of space you need to cool, you’ll need one ton of AC cooling power. So, a 1,000-square-foot home will need 2 tons of AC power.

An air conditioner’s watt usage depends on multiple factors, including the type of AC unit, its size, and how often you use it. With that said, most central air conditioners consume between 3,000 and 3,500 watts. Meanwhile, window AC units use 900 to 1,400 watts, and portable air conditioners consume 2,900 to 4,100 watts.
