"I was given a price on the phone of $225. The bill was actually $482.98. I was unaware that I would be paying travel time for 2 men, especially when they were coming for another job near us. One man did all the work. The other man handed him tools, etc. I could have done that for him. Both men were very nice and did a great job - Iâ m only complaining about 5 hours of labor when they were here for a maximum of 1.3 hours. A part was $32.98, which I will pay. When I called the owner, he said he has never been accused of â paddingâ a bill before and to pay what I felt was right. He just needed to be more clear about all the add on costs- especially travel time, and that the actual fee would be $150/hour. I would have never hired him."

Exterior Lighting questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on system type, issue severity, and labor rates.

Options include pathway lights, spotlights, and smart lighting systems. Choose based on function and aesthetics.

Flickering lights, intermittent outages, or physical damage to fixtures signal immediate repair to avoid electrical hazards.

While most general electricians can repair lamps and light fixtures, it is often better to hire a lamp repair specialist. Many electricians prefer larger jobs, such as fixing electrical systems or relocating fixtures, and may not offer lamp repair services due to the small scale of the work. Additionally, some lamps, particularly antique models, require dedicated expertise that a general electrician might not have. A lamp repair specialist will be familiar with various types of fixtures and can provide a more dedicated service. If you have already hired an electrician for a larger project, you can ask them to look at your lamp, but for a standalone repair, a specialist is typically the best option.

While wet-rated and damp-rated lighting is designed to handle contact with moisture, there’s a difference between the two. Wet-rated lighting is safety-rated to be placed in areas with direct exposure to water, including your shower. Fixtures classed as wet-rated are made with waterproof seals to protect the filament and other electrical components from water and moisture.

Damp-rated fixtures can be used in places with some moisture contact, but not direct exposure. They don’t have the same waterproof seals used in wet-rated fixtures. Damp-rated lighting can be used on your bathroom ceiling or along a wall outside of your shower.
