Gutter guards work in heavy rain, but perhaps not as well. While you don't technically need different gutters for metal roofs than you do for other types of roofs, most metal roofs use a half-round or K-style gutter system. On top of that, your gutters will need more brackets than homes that have shingle roofs since the gutters won’t fit as flush against the fascia as they would against traditional roofing systems, where they’re installed to the roof deck.

The best drainage system deposits rainwater as far away from your house as possible. This limits foundation damage but also helps prevent the discovery of inches of water from a leak when you look in your basement. There are some drainage options, like French drains—a perforated pipe that releases water across a line of small stones—but the best option is always a long pipe that releases water far from the house.

New aluminum gutters can last up to 30 years when cared for properly. Aluminum is likely to last longer in low-humidity areas that do not expose the metal to salty air. However, aluminum is a good choice for cold, wet, and snowy climates.
