I refuse to pay for work that was not done and they will not return my phone calls to discuss the discrepancy on the invoice and now put a lien on my property even though I paid for the work that was actually done. They will not release the lien or discuss the invoice with me. I would not recommend them at all."

Insulated vinyl siding costs about twice as much as the cheapest form of vinyl siding, but it’s still more affordable than other types of siding, including fiber cement, wood, stone, and brick. You get a lot of bang for your buck with vinyl siding; it’s durable, it’s available in a wide range of styles and colors, and it helps lower your energy bills.

Fiber cement siding will last an average of 50 years, but you could get up to 70 years of useful life out of yours with proper maintenance. All types of siding, including fiber cement, will have shorter lifespans in extreme climates, as salt, impact from blown debris, heavy rain, and intense sunshine can all limit siding lifespan.

Some homeowners use caulk on the edges of clapboard siding to help seal it. However, this method invites new problems. With so many gaps sealed, clapboard siding is often unable to drain properly and moisture from rain or other sources can build up inside. This can lead to rot and other issues over time. When repairing clapboards, it’s best to avoid caulking the final product. The exception is trim around windows and doors, which should be caulked to avoid moisture problems.

Regularly clean with mild detergent, inspect for cracks, and replace damaged sections as needed.

If you buy new cedar, the process of cutting it usually roughs up the surface enough that it doesn’t require sanding.
