"Ramos Maintenance did an excellent job repairing and reinforcing a shower glass panel in our condo after a support bracket snapped. Andres clearly explained the issue, walked us through the solution, and completed the work efficiently and professionally. Communication was excellent from start to finish. He was very responsive, coordinated seamlessly with our cleaner, and was mindful of our guest check-in schedule. He even returned a few days later to remove the tape and confirm everything had cured properly, which really shows the pride he takes in his work. The workmanship was solid, clean, and done with great attention to detail. The shower glass panel now feels very secure and looks great. Pricing was very fair, especially considering the quality of the work and level of service. I would absolutely hire Ramos Maintenance again and highly recommend them to anyone looking for reliable, high-quality work in Maui. Mahalo Andres!"

"My wife and I needed a custom cabinet to fit an alcove in our Victorian home. Paul of Sable Studios very quickly understood our problem and designed a cabinet to fit perfectly with a pull-out shelf for our printer, built-in power outlets, drop-down desk, built-in file cabinet, several small drawers, and glass-fronted shelves. In two weeks he came by with one of his employees and installed it in less than a day. It matched the vintage woodwork of the room perfectly! And, moreover, it let us get rid of several bulky clunky pieces of furniture, with this new beautiful build-in cabinet perfectly flush with the wall containing all our stuff. I cannot emphasize how beautiful and perfect this cabinet is, and the price was reasonable for the quality and level of service his studio provides. I cannot emphasize enough how great his work is, and Paul is also a wonderful, funny guy."

Small jobs welcome

"I work in the remediation trade and was fortunate enough to meet Roger on a shared project. He has a pleasure to work with. Roger is Punctual, polite, clean, and QUICK! Good lord are they fast. His work seamlessly matched the existing smooth texture walls and ceilings, with no lines visible anywhere. Working as a remediation tech I take out a LOT of damaged drywall, so I can speak somewhat with authority when I tell you that Roger is very adept at putting the new clean drywall back up. If you were looking for someone who knows their craft well and is willing to guide you through the drywall process then your search is over."

"I needed my house to be remodeled and chose ED Construction. This was the best choice I made for my home! The price was reasonable for all the duties performed. I had an outdated 2 bedroom, 2 bath house with a studio that was falling apart. Edison rebuilt everything from the bottom up. He repainted, took down/hung drywall, redid my flooring, ceiling and windows, put up new light fixtures and cabinets, installed new toilets, bathtub and a stand up shower space. If I had any questions or concerns, he would explain everything to me in detail. I'm glad I chose ED Construction. I'm so happy with my end results."

"Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

A nail in drywall cannot hold very much—usually only a few pounds. A nail in a stud can add support and hold around 20 pounds. If you are trying to hang something heavier, get some help from drywall anchors—toggle bolts are very strong and able to withstand more weight.

Most handy homeowners can tackle removing texture from unpainted walls. Removing texture from painted walls is a bit trickier. Paint acts as a sealant, so you can’t soften the texture with water. Instead, you’ll have to add a layer of drywall compound known as a skim coat. This process is messy and takes some practice.

Although they have similar applications, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Their primary differences lie in their composition, consistency, and ideal use cases.

Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it thicker than joint compound. It dries quickly and is easy to sand, which makes it ideal for small wall repair projects like filling nail holes or patching minor damage.

Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum. It is primarily used for large-scale projects, such as taping and finishing the seams on newly installed drywall. It tends to shrink more than spackle and can be more difficult to spread.

While both products can be used to fill small depressions and cracks, spackle cannot replace joint compound for taping and mudding new drywall. Conversely, you can often use joint compound for small patching jobs typically done with spackle.

The average cost to apply a skip-trowel drywall texture to walls is $1.25 to $2.00 per square foot. Ceilings cost slightly more because of the increased difficulty of working overhead. Additional cost factors include any drywall repairs and removal of existing textures or wallpaper.

You can put certain types of plaster over other types, but doing so isn't always the best idea. For example, putting a coat of gypsum over lime plaster is possible, but doing so will limit the lime plaster's breathability and potentially affect its performance.

Since cement plaster tends to leave a textured surface, no matter how much you smooth it, some people prefer to use gypsum plaster as a topcoat over cement plaster, creating a smoother surface.
