Small jobs welcome

"I needed my deck replaced before the holidays. Alex gave a fair price and finished the job in a timely manner. Very friendly and dependable. I plan to have A&S do more work on the inside of my home as well."

"Had a fabulous experience all around with Shane and his crew. When he came for an estimate, Shane took the time to explain the process in as much detail as I wanted. His price was competitive with others who had bid on the project. He told me it would be a two day job with the first day stripping and cleaning and the second day of replacing a couple boards and refinishing. My deck had not been worked on in 6-7 years so it took multiple coats of stain. I am including a before and after picture so that you can see the results: https://s3.amazonaws.com/carl-public/Deck+before+restoration.jpg https://s3.amazonaws.com/carl-public/Deck+after+restoration.jpg"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.

Yes, it is generally safe to have a fire pit on a deck, but you must adhere to building codes and take several safety precautions. For both built-in and freestanding models, you must use a heat-resistant barrier, such as a fire pit pad or heat shield, between the pit and the deck. Additionally, consider the weight of the fire pit and ensure your deck can structurally support it, reinforcing it if necessary. The fire pit must also be positioned a safe distance from your house, particularly from materials like vinyl siding, to prevent heat damage.

When sourced responsibly, the most sustainable wood decking options are timber trees like redwood, pine, Douglas fir, Nootka cypress, and Western red cedar. These tree species are fast-growing with low carbon emissions. Plus, most timber woods make durable deck materials because of their resistance to rot and decay over time.

If you have wood decking, there are several common deck problems that you might encounter. For example, your natural wood boards may fade over time due to things like sunlight, weather, and debris. On top of that, some types of wood decking can rot, grow mold, and attract destructive pests—including termites, carpenter ants, and woodpeckers.

Materials for a second-story deck must be weather- and rot-resistant, though the specific choices will largely be determined by your budget and style preference. Pressure-treated wood is on the lower end of the price scale, but it can be customized and stained the way you like it. Composite, on the other hand, is pricier for installation and has fewer options for customization, but you’ll save money and time in the long run because it requires little maintenance.
