"I hired Waters to check out the duct work and HVAC at my mother's home. Jared found that the 45-yr-old duct work, original to the house, had holes and rips in it &in some places no longer connected; if sum, my mother was heating the attic. Jared was so thorough & did an analysis of the current unit and found that the unit was not big enough after closing in the garage and building on an extension. I had to go back to VA, but my mother was very pleased with the professionalism and courteousness of the employees from Waters. She said, "You couldn't have asked for better of the 3 young men." It's warm in here, now, & that's what matters!"

"Willy was very prompt, professional, helpful, informed, friendly & obviously has had some extensive training! I currently pursuing an HVAC diploma degree from Savannah Technical College and have some experience working on AC & refrigeration systems now. He can speak the language & “live the life” of a highly skilled tech. But his friendliness and innovative mind caused me to recommend. I am also currently in Real Estate training & this will be my guy as a recommendation. You will love him!!!!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

An HVAC system typically lasts between 10 and 30 years, with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. The longevity of the system is influenced by factors such as the quality of the unit, usage frequency, local climate, and how well it is maintained. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, filter replacements, and professional inspections, can help maximize its lifespan. Different components within the system have varying life expectancies. For example:

  • Furnaces: 15 to 30 years

  • Boilers: 20 to 35 years

  • Air Conditioners (AC units): 12 to 20 years

  • Heat Pumps: 10 to 20 years

  • Ductless Mini-Splits: 10 to 30 years

For the most part, you should leave your AC fan in “auto” mode so that it only runs during a heating or cooling cycle. Keeping it in this position uses less energy, which equals lower utility bills. However, there are some situations where it’s better to leave your AC fan on, including if you have allergies or there are lots of people in your home.

Absolutely! You can seriously improve the overall value of your home by maintaining high-quality, compatible systems for heating and cooling. Potential buyers will love not having to worry about getting a new HVAC unit for 15 to 20 years and will pay more for it. For maximum efficiency and cost savings, replacing the furnace and air conditioner at the same time, when possible, gives you (and potential future buyers) reliable comfort and modern convenience.

You may never need an AC recharge if there are no leaks. However, if your AC unit has a leak that cannot be patched appropriately, you’ll need an AC recharge every time the freon level drops low enough that it disrupts your system—this could be once every two to three years. It all depends on the size and frequency of the leak.

You should use a breathable, weather-resistant cover with ventilation. It can be a top cover or a full cover that has mesh to allow airflow. A full, non-breathable cover can cause moisture to build up, leading to rust, frozen parts, and corrosion. A full cover also attracts unwanted critters, such as mice, that can damage the wiring and your unit. If you need to protect your AC unit from falling icicles, choose a sturdy top cover or piece of wood that prevents icicles from damaging your unit.
