"Good install but they never came back to remove thrash and never sent me any manuals or information on the unit. They said they would be back to pick up debris and drop off a user manual but did nit come back. I finally cleaned up the mess but still do not have a manual. System seems to be working well."

"I was having problems with my Home Warranty finding a repair tech. After 3 weeks with no A/C I decided to call around. Went on Angi's list and requested service. Shawn from Atlas HVAC called me right away. Told him what was wrong and he said he could see me in an hour and a half. Told him he didn't need too, but he insisted and he showed up. He found the problem and fixed the A/C. Shawn also found another issue and will get a part ordered. He explained what was going on and showed me what happened. Great service with a fast response. Townsend Ga. Thanks again Shawn"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

You should flush your AC drain line once every three months to keep it clear of debris and buildup. Keeping your AC drain line clean prevents clogs, backups, mold growth, and extra wear on your AC unit. If you live in a humid area or have several furry pets, up your cleaning schedule to once a month.

You can run an HRV with air conditioning—assuming that you decide to keep the system on during the summer. The HRV will continue to bring in fresh outdoor air, which will then flow into your AC unit and cool down your home. It will also keep moving the stuffy indoor air out of your house.

You will enjoy greater energy efficiency and save on your annual energy bills, with new, modern HVAC systems using 30% to 50% less energy than older models. Upgrading your HVAC system is also a great way to embrace new technology, such as smart thermostats, lighting, fan speed, and humidity from your phone or tablet.

There are a few ways to determine if a vent is open or closed. You can inspect the vent and examine the position of the fins. If there are spaces between them, the vent is open. If the fins are flat and touching, the vent is closed. You can also stand under the vent when the system is running to see if you feel air flowing through it.

While most air conditioners can last between 10 and 20 years, they will only last this long (or longer) if properly taken care of. Routine maintenance and inspections help keep your AC unit running in tip-top shape but understanding what factors will decrease its lifespan will also help keep your unit running cool.

Some things that shorten your AC’s lifespan include:

  • Extreme outdoor conditions, like high humidity or extensive salt spray

  • Improper installation

  • Extended run times, either by the unit being too small or the thermostat setting too low

  • Not performing required maintenance
