"They had the system that both me and my wife liked. I wanted the hard water removed and she didn't want a water softener so the filtered water did both. Whole house garage and out buildings will now have filtered water"

"The sales rep took several water testsâ ¦ The sales rep took several water tests and showed me the results. She told me that I needed more than just a water softener. I also needed a system to address the rust and iron in my well water. I did not want to spend a fortune but the sales lady was pretty convincing. The price was good and the workmanship was excellent. My water is clean again ! Now I can tackle the original problem. My toilet has bad rust stains. I will either get it clean, or replace it. I could not do this until the water was fixed."

"Our old water heater finally gave out, and the team at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Savannah Metro recommended and installed a tankless system for us. The whole process was easier than I expected, and they answered all of my questions without rushing. Very professional and easy to work with. I would gladly use them again."

"Greg McBride sealed my crawlspace and I am delighted with his work. I bought a home on Skidaway Island in Savannah, GA in June, 2011. It was about twenty years old. The crawlspace was open to the elements at the back of the house. The insulation was falling from the ceiling, the plastic sheeting on the floor was torn, and water was infiltrating the space. Greg and his crew removed the old insulation, sanded and treated the floor joists and flooring, installed a french drain system around the perimeter, installed a 20 mil. liner, sealed the openings, and connected the crawl space to an HVAC duct. The crawl space now looks terrific: you could eat off the floor. Greg provided superior service and workmanship. When I first asked him for an estimate, he provided me with links to online resources about the benefits of a conditioned crawl space. Greg comes back annually and checks the crawl space at no charge. I am thoroughly delighted with the job he did and highly recommend him."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Yes. Hard water is what causes scale buildup, and a whole-house filter provides numerous benefits beyond water softening. Any water that enters your home will go through the filter, which cleans up all water that you will use for cooking, bathing, and drinking. A whole-house water filter also blocks harmful particles like heavy metals.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

Yes. To get soft water, you can install a water softening system, which will replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. Water softeners cost anywhere from $200 to $6,000, depending on the size and complexity of the system. You can either install a water softener for the whole house or just at your shower heads. If you’re sensitive to sodium or potassium, you can install a salt-free water conditioner.

Yes, a water softener can remove scale deposits. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, after you add a water softener to your home, “gradually the softer water will dissolve limescale scale deposits and remove the problem entirely.” Installing a water softener—or water descaler—will also help prevent new scale deposits from forming.

It’s unlikely that hard water on its own could cause substantial hair loss or damage, though it’s true that bathing in hard water can cause your scalp to feel itchy or flaky and might dull your hair’s natural shine. Using high-quality shampoo and conditioner or buying a whole-home water softener can decrease these issues.
