In business for 3+ years and owner-operated, I have transformed many kitchens/bathrooms around the Atlanta & Marietta area. I come work onsite and I will remove all the doors/hardware and put them back when the job is complete. I also do extensive prep work to ensure the cabinets are deglossed and lightly sanded so that the paint has a better surface to adhere to. I then fill any holes or gaps before painting to make the cabinets look as new as possible, and tape off the floors, walls, and backsplashes before getting started. I prefer to use either Benjamin Moore Advance Formula or Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane, both great formulas for cabinetry. Especially with the high quality bonding primer I use beforehand. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

You can certainly seal butcher block countertops, but not permanently. Due to the nature of the materials, it will require resurfacing down the line. This is true no matter what you use to seal the countertop, including polyurethane and mineral oil. If you skip the stripping or sanding step, the new finish may peel or flake away from the railing easily. Using a wood stripper will completely remove the old stain or paint while sanding will help to prime the surface.
