"Handymack did an excellent job on our basement. They installed a bathroom with a grinder pump for the sewage, built a closet for the pump, HVAC, and hot water heater which also created storage space for us. built a kitchenette, added bead board to existing walls, installed a ship lap ceiling, and replaced two exterior doors. The finishing details were more than we asked them to do, so it was a pleasant surprise when we came home to a staged basement. It was nice to have people go the extra mile since it is so hard to find hard workers these days. I highly recommend Handymack for all your home improvement needs. They took care of everything from the building, electrical, and plumbing, and their labor cost was a fair price. Thank you, Handymack!"

"I highly recommend the work done on the installation of my water heater. The technician was professional, punctual, and paid great attention to detail throughout the entire process. He took the time to explain how everything worked and made sure the installation was completed properly and safely. He also left the area clean and organized when the job was finished. I am very satisfied with the quality of his work and would definitely recommend him to anyone needing water heater installation services. Excellent experience!"

Small jobs welcome

"Lauren is very knowledgeable about home repairs and projects. She has replaced some HVAC piping inside the house which also included sheet rock work to connect to another room. She installed a dehumidifier in our shed in the backyard which included drilling through the shed and installing the drain pipe to the outside. She has replaced several outdoor electrical fixtures and helped replaced the kitchen faucet. She was very pleasant and professional. She is honest in her ability to complete projects and her estimates are fair. We will be calling her again with more projects/repairs in the future!"

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

You don’t have to put smoke detectors in every room. At a minimum, though, there should be one on every level of your home, one in every bedroom, and one in the hallways outside the bedrooms. If you have a floor without bedrooms, place a smoke detector in the living room or next to any stairs that lead to an upper level. Attics and basements should also have at least one smoke alarm.

Grounding is a great first step to prevent electrical shock, but you can take it further with GFCI outlets and AFCIs (arc fault circuit interrupters). In particular, AFCIs help protect against the type of electrical arcs that cause fires, like if a mouse chews on a wire or your laptop starts overheating at the wall. These are required in some areas of your home.

Yes, a chimney damper is necessary. It controls airflow in and out of your fireplace, helping to retain heat when closed and allowing smoke to escape when open. Without a damper, your home could lose warmth during cold months, leading to higher energy bills. It also helps prevent downdrafts and keeps animals or debris from entering the chimney. In short, it’s essential for efficiency and safety.

Regular professional chimney cleaning and a well-fitting chimney cap are two of the most effective measures to help prevent flue blockages. Annual cleaning keeps the flue from developing a thick layer of creosote. The chimney cap keeps debris out and stops critters from going down your flue for shelter while carrying clog-worthy nesting material.

No, you can’t completely fireproof a house. There is always a chance that a fire can break out inside or outside your home. Even if most of the home is built with fireproof materials, a long-burning fire can still cause damage. Still, fireproofing efforts can buy you additional time to evacuate and give you a better chance of salvaging your home after a fire rather than needing to rebuild entirely.
