"I received the call back soon after I input my information into Angie. The conversation was honest and very professional. A tech was at my location within hours, located the problem and the water was back on. My tenants had been without water for over a week because of the effects of the hurricane. I let everyone know how efficient Southern plumbing is and I would recommend them to everyone."

"I wish that they at least look through a camera to see what was clogging the drain. The team was nice, polite, and clean. But, the cost was a bit too much for just running the snake through the pipe, and not knowing the root cause of the problem. They need a camera!"

Small jobs welcome

"My drain line was clogged which was making my ceiling leak. They came out and got it all taken care of less than an hour after I called. I've used them before and had nothing but good results. I would recommend them to anyone!"

"Benjamin Franklin responded to our request for service the morning after we called and left a message (the evening before). Notified us that a plumber would be sent earlier than the scheduled appointment if he became available sooner. Call service rep was very friendly, explained how the service call would be handled (and the costs). Acknowledged on-line coupon credit for service call resulting in diagnosis and repair as necessary. Plumber (Jordan) arrived on time, was very courteous and friendly, took measures to keep house and work area clean, explained the work recommended and costs. Repair was made expeditiously and a two year warranty on parts and labor was given. The service was pricey, but the result and the plumber's professionalism were exemplary--and the response time to our needs was very good (not an emergency). We have used Benjamin Franklin Plumbing for many of our plumbing needs--both water and natural gas and have been pleased every time. Again, pricey but very reliable."

"We chose CrawlSpace Medic based on professionalism, reliability, reasonable cost estimate, and previous reviews on Angie’s List. Each day the crew showed up on time, worked hard all day, and cleaned up at end of each day; were respectful of property, and very professional, and pleasant to work with. They kept us informed of progress, and what was being done each day. During removal of old piping, they found additional damage behind the pipes that was not visible/identified during initial inspection- were very reasonable with determining the additional cost. They replaced damaged sills, old rotted floor joists, installed permanent support girders with masonry piers, installed a 10ml plastic vapor barrier, and installed multiple foundation vents. We are very satisfied with the results. Our floors are no longer bouncy, and floors feel very sturdy- was a dramatic difference after work completed. The 10 ml plastic Vapor barrier also has prevented that old damp smell inside the house after heavy rains. Was a good experience, and reasonable cost-(initial estimate $10,400, additional work required and we added foundation vent installation was $3800); would hire again."

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Food grease, soap buildup, paper products, and tree roots often cause serious clogs.

With a one-way cleanout, you can access your sewer line from one direction. Depending on the way it curves, a plumber can either access the side of the pipe that goes into your home or the side that goes to your yard. On the other hand, two-way cleanouts allow pros to access both sides of the sewer line, thanks to their dual-pipe design (they’re usually U-shaped).

First, find the cleanout pipe in your yard. Unscrew the cap—you may need a wrench to do so. Then, get a drain snake. You can use a non-motorized one, but a motorized snake will make the job a little easier. Feed the snake through the pipe until it reaches the clog. Spin the snake continuously, but don’t try to feed it through the pipe anymore. Keep spinning until you feel it break the clog apart.

Even if the shower drain doesn’t seem clogged or dirty, plan to clean it out about once per month—or more frequently if you or your family shed a lot of hair. It’s a good practice to remove any hair from the drain on a daily basis, as hair can accumulate fast and cause clogs in no time. You may also want to have a plumber thoroughly clean the drains in your home once every six months.

To keep window wells from filling up with water, you need to stay on top of maintenance. Remove debris as it fills up, and regularly loosen the gravel at the base if it’s become compacted. You can also reslope your yard to make sure water flows away from the window well (and your home’s foundation), and you can even install a window well cover to prevent debris from building up. Installing an actual drainpipe at the base of the well can also prevent window well drainage problems.
