"One of the ways to judge the quality and professionalism of the work done by a home inspector is to take a good look at his home inspection report. I was concerned as Clay explained my results to both parties. Then I realized he was trying not to hurt the sellers feelings as he explained what they needed to complete. He was kind at telling them what a great job they have done as 3rd or 4th owners of the home I was seeking an inspection on. I was a tiny bit concerned about detail. However, when my timely report arrived, it was simplified with great detail and photos. As I continue to search for a new home, I will call Clay for my home inspections. He also showed up on time after a very short notice."

"They did a wonderful job on my sunroom. A previous contractor did a VERY poor job - the sunroom was a disaster. But Coastal Empire made it BEAUTIFUL!! I was very happy with the results. The workers were very nice, and always cleaned up after their work."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

Your radon mitigation system may be loud because it’s time to replace it. Any sounds are usually from the inline fan that helps create the vacuum and resulting airflow. If you hear a new, loud mechanical or humming noise from your radon fan, it might be time to replace it. Most fans used in radon mitigation systems last up to 10 years, but may need to be replaced sooner.

Use a radon test kit or hire professionals to conduct a detailed assessment of radon levels in your home.

If high radon levels are detected, steps include sealing entry points, installing a mitigation system, and retesting the air regularly to ensure reduced levels.

Radon is present almost everywhere but, like sunlight, the concentration levels and how often you are exposed to it have a large part to play in just how dangerous it is. There are levels of radon that are acceptable inside a house, but above a certain limit, radon becomes a serious radioactive hazard that is a known cause of lung cancer. In fact, radon exposure is the number two leading cause of lung cancer (after smoking).

The lifespan of a radon mitigation system depends on the type of system and its maintenance. With proper care, a system can last for many decades. Passive systems tend to last longer as they have fewer components that require replacement. Active systems, which have more moving parts like fans, generally have a shorter lifespan. For instance, water filtration devices and active pressurization systems require more frequent maintenance. While the system as a whole is durable, the radon fan in an active system typically has a lifespan of 5 to 10 years and will need to be replaced. As long as the fan is working, the mitigation system should function correctly.
